Kurogane’s parents ran and protected the province of Suwa from demons and other evil forces. Both died at the same time, his father killed by demons and his mother stabbed by a sword appearing through a portal, causing the barrier to fall. A demon came to their home carrying his father's arm and sword, Ginryū. Kurogane snapped, grabbed the sword and attacked. Princess Tomoyo was the one to break through to him and get him to stop his mindless attacks. Grateful for that, Kurogane joined the palace's ninja guard to served under Tomoyo. However, he had a near obsessive need to become stronger in order to stop those he cared for being taken away from him again. Tomoyo ‘cursed’ him, telling him that each needless kill would decrease his strength and then sent him to the Space Time Witch.
To travel and hopefully find his way home Kurogane gave up Ginryū. Kurogane started to travel with Sakura, Syaoran, Fai, and Mokona. At first Kurogane had no desire to get involved with the others, but quickly began to help. He taught Syaoran how to handle a sword and acted as a general father figure to the kids. Kurogane also grew close to Fai, saving the mage’s life by turning him into a vampire. Later he saved Fai again by cutting off his own arm. Fai in turn gave up his magic to buy Kurogane a new arm before they went off to face Fei Wong Reed.
