Installation Reports, mark II

Installation #3 - Internet & music fiend's laptop.
Distribution: Linux Mint 8 "Helena"
Hardware: Dell Latitude 610D - Broadcomm wireless, Intel 915 integrated graphics.
End user: Technical experience, but not a tinkerer.

Major hard-disk-full issue was hampering performance and restricting an ever-growing music library. Older IDE laptop requires drives no longer being manufactured so an upgrade sooner rather than later was required. Since reloading the OS was needed anyway, we put Linux Mint on it (Essentially 'Ubuntu Karmic' with a focus on out-of-the-box functionality rather than ideological purity or Intellectual-property-ass-covering.)

Installation Experience: Other than the typical (and predicted) hassle of getting the Broadcomm wireless card working, no issues. Very frustrating, those Broadcaomm cards but once you know what you need to download ahead of time, no problems.

Post Install: User purchased a couple of small Windows games, and we discovered that the 'copy protection' scheme requires a Windows remote-networking call which is not implimented by WINE. An installation of VirtualBox and the creation of a Windows XP virtual machine (and a lot of head-pounding on the stupid registration for the games that has nothing do do with Linux and everything to do with software which has a HUGE FAQ section on registration problems...) everything is working fine, including the sound.
