Finally saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I this afternoon.

Really good. They even found a natural breaking spot for the cliffie. Very impressive. I appreciated the editing in what was used from the source material, what was condensed, trimmed, kept in, cut out -- all of it. Smart choices made there. That's been a problem with some of the other movies; if you hadn't read the books you were probably puzzled by some of the explanations and/or plot points and/or pacing. This one had a great balance.

Also, if I may -- KUDOS to the writer/director for not ending the movie after a big old action-fight scene. Yes, there was the whole capture/escape sequence that things ended on, but it was played on a much quieter, less grand scale than the typical Big Battle Scene that most movies in this genre go for in their climax. It was the right call, because that battle is still to come.

The Tale of the Three Brothers/Deathly Hollows -- most excellently handled. Loved the shadow puppets effects of visualizing the story, keeping it true to the concept that it was a story being read/related to Harry from a fairy tale book, but also calling back to the "origins" tie-in that most great tales come with.

My favorite scene, however, was that brief minute when Harry tugs Hermione up to dance with him. It was such a fantastic portrayal of showing the intimacy of their friendship; intimacy without a sexual component. Just two best friends who are holding onto each other and taking a moment to take strength and enjoyment from each other's presence at a time when there is precious little else to hold onto. It was ... that was beautiful friendship on display. Without a word needing to be spoken.

Loved, loved, loved.

And desperately needed as a respite when the story is so dark and despairing on such a large scale. This was that spark of unquenchable humanity that Voldemort does not possess for himself, and would never understand.

Great movie. I think my favorite of the series so far. These kids have come a long ways, man. Now I can't wait for Part II to get released.
