And they have something that those psycho siblings never had: a baseline knowledge of right and wrong to draw from.

They had JOHN, who, despite being all twisted up into his need for revenge, managed to raise his sons into two decent men.

I'm appreciating the episode more now as I think about it, but I don't think it's ever going to be one of my favorites.

Yes, there are good bits in this episode. It's not going to hit my list of favorite episodes, but I think there's definitely some character stuff that was revealed that we need to know about for the future.

And it left its mark on them. But they were still together, there at the end. Holding onto each other all the more.

Yes, I think with the two families there was the suggestion there that they could go either way. Of course, I thought it was a bit optimistic an ending given that the wife had lost her brother and supposedly the family had been in crisis due to the loss of another death in the family. Maybe we weren't supposed to mourn him that much since he was something of a jerk. Most of all, I can't imagine that family living in that house after what happened. And it's not like they had any attachment to it yet.

Yeah - the Dad even admitted partway through the episode that just because they were still together now didn't mean it would stay that way -- they were just *trying* to keep it together as best they could. So even with the HEA family there was that suggestion that Happily Ever After is not a guarantee. Which I thought played into the callback to Wishful Thinking, when Sam and Dean talk about how they don't get what they want, and they have to fight just to hold onto what they have.

Ah, nice tie-in that. Yes, I think so.
