Sorry about taking so long! It’s probably not what you were expecting, but I hope it’s okay. I apologize if it’s as lame as I think it turned out to be. orz

There were some days where Ciel found that he simply wanted to lock himself in his room, curl up under the covers, and shut out the world around him. Fighting back the strong urge to do exactly that, he settled for slamming the door shut and sliding onto an armchair. After carelessly tossing his eye patch to the side, Ciel closed his eyes with a sigh.

He returned from his visit to Elizabeth in a very bad mood. Recently, her mother and the Queen had been dropping hints that it was time to take the step from engagement to marriage. Not that he had anything against Elizabeth, but marriage was just another responsibility being added onto his plate. And it was one he did not want.

Ciel could admit readily that he was fond of Elizabeth, as she had been a wonderful companion once. He could never hate anyone who tried so hard for him. Her efforts to draw out hints of his past self did not go unnoticed, but he knew it was pointless; Elizabeth and he lived in completely different worlds nowadays. Finding his parents’ bodies and spending a month in captivity had forced him to grow far beyond his years. The time he had spent as the Earl-more specifically: the Queen’s dog-hadn’t helped matters much. By age 12, Ciel had become accustomed to seeing corpses and dealing with the underhanded activity that came with the unsavory parts of his country. He supposed he kept her at arm’s length to spare her the horrors he saw so often. Ciel was not sure if it was a favor for a once-friend or his own selfish desire to keep one part of his childhood untainted.

There was also the matter of his parents’ murderers to be considered. He knew with complete certainty that they were not above using anything they could against him. Ciel’s hands clenched tightly into fists, frustration welling up inside of him. It had already been seven years since the contract had been formed, and he wasn’t much closer to reaching his goal.

Hands gently kneaded at his tense shoulders as a voice murmured in his ear. “The young master is incredibly stressed. Did the Marchioness Middleford’s words really bother you that much?”

Startled, Ciel’s eyes flew open. Tilting his head back slightly, he was met with his butler’s almost curious gaze. Ignoring his irritation at being caught off guard, Ciel merely leaned back, allowing Sebastian to continue. The familiarity of the action only served to relax him further, and he felt his tension slip away.

As the years had passed, Ciel had been submitted to more and more pressure, both from his duties as the owner of the Funtom Company and his duties as the Earl of Phantomhive. He had held up impressively, but when he finally cracked two years ago, he had turned to the one that knew him inside and out for comfort.

He looked up at Sebastian, and the hands immediately stopped. Sebastian leaned over his master’s shoulder, catching his soft whisper. A smile crossed his lips. “Understood.”
