So on Saturday, Phil, Lauren and I piled into my car and headed off to Orlando for AFO. It was Phil's first convention ever, and it had been about a year since I'd been to an anime con, so I was super-excited. We got there at around noon and checked in but our room wasn't ready yet, so Lauren and I got into costume in a nearby bathroom and checked our luggage in at the front desk, then we went to go get tickets.
It was a really good medium sized con, with tons of cosplayers. There were probably more people there in costume than there were in plain clothes, and so many of them were really great. There were other Ls and Misas there, though I am of the opinion that we were the best...but then, I tend to be biased. We couldn't enter the costume contest, of course, since we hadn't made the clothes we were wearing, but I still had a lot of fun getting into character and finally having an excuse for my terrible posture.
On Saturday we caught the end of a SSBM tournament, went to an AMV critiquing panel, and saw the cosplay contest...plus walked around the dealer's room four million times. I ended up being really good about not spending exorbitant amounts of money. All I got was a poster for myself and a keychain for my sister. That night, Lauren and I went to the rave for a little while (Phil was passed out in the room) but it was sort of lame despite there being tons of people there. No one was really dancing, just kind of running around like retards...
Got up early on Sunday to go to a 9 AM panel on Dr. Steel. The man himself was not there, unfortunately, nor was there merchandise to be bought, but it was still entertaining. We did a quick draw contest in which Phil drew Gorgons (monsters that look suspiciously like lobsters from the epically bad old sci-fi film "Teenagers from Outer Space") for every prompt, then Lauren and I went to a panel on how to successfully do an Artist's Alley both while Phil went to one on how they did the props for Power Rangers. The whole weekend he kept stalking various people dressed as Edward Elric or other characters with robotic appendages for the purpose of doing research for the eventual Billy Quizboy costume he intends on putting together. Yes, I am actually going to have a Billy to my Pete. Needless to say I am incredibly excited for this.
Anyways, after that we went to the AMV contest, but left before the closing ceremonies. They were doing this thing called Swords of Orlandia which was a LARP sort of thing where you could choose a side, good or evil, and collect experience in the form of gold coins from various con activities, as well as something called shards for your side. Had we been there all three days, I probably would have participated. As it was, I just gave all my experience to some random guy. And now, pictures!
The SSBM cosplayers that were at the tournament...this was the best picture I could get because of all the people who were in the way. From left to right we have Pit, Sheik, Luigi, Snake, Mario, Wario, and Mario again. Biker Wario was there too, but for some reason he didn't get in the picture.
Who cares if Jafar isn't from an anime, this is just freakin' awesome.
Same goes for Cosmo. There was also a Chowder and a Flapjack there; I wish I could have gotten their pictures.
Eyebrows!
An apple a day keeps the Death Gods away...
L does not appreciate your enthusiasm.
Derp.
And then we met Bill Cosby at a nearby McDonald's. And Phil...molested him, apparently. All in all, I would call it a hell of a good weekend.
EDIT: If you don't hear from me for the next few days, it will be because a hurricane is supposed to hit tomorrow and so there's a chance we may lose power. I don't really know how bad it's going to be, but I'll keep you posted if possible.
