The walls reached high, proudly displaying holy decor of an elegant grandeur. Footsteps clicked against the solid floor, and he walked with his shoulders back, directly next to a broader figure looming in the corner of his peripheral vision.
A small book lay open in one hand, grasping a pen with the other. He made a note of every word the older man spoke. Nodding, he focused on his commitment, despite being seemingly unable to grasp the intricate details encompassing the information.
"One more thing." He lifted his head, and the other man stood in front of him, the light from behind casting a shadow over his large frame, concealing all his features. The man held a long, slender silver platter and lifted the dome to reveal a perfectly stacked layered desert. "Do try my new cake. I spent ages perfecting the recipe."
He clasped the book shut, slipping the pen away into the holder. Two fingers promptly lifted to the corner of his forehead, but before his parted lips can utter a single word, the world around him shattered.
He stood at his lonesome, the glorious walls crumbling into darkness. Unearthly figures with indistinct forms rose from the earth and consumed the light. A streak of white cut through the darkness, and it parted. For one brief moment, he caught the glowing white outline of a clown.
With the darkness broken, he dashed forward. Although knowing he lacked divine weaponry, he confidently entered the fray.
Raven feathers made their unhurried descent to the floor.
