One of maman's best friends, a co-worker from Algeria named Younes, lives in Rome. His wife Caline is french, and an artist, and a restorer who worked on the entrance to the Sistine Chapel.
They had me over for lunch today at their house just outside of Rome's city walls, with a wild garden positively consuming the house with flowers. They have a giant, over-excited black lab named Youka that slobbered all over my skirt but I didn't mind all that much.
Lunch: avocado and mushrooms doused in lemon juice, hard-boiled eggs, tuna, cheese on pizza bianco, melone, and the coolest white wine ever to slip down this throat.
(Have a mentioned that Rome is hotter than hell?)
We chatted easily much to my relief, about family and art and travel and the new pope, and they asked to see my sketchbook, and said very nice things about which made me feel very flatterd.

Ouf.
All I want to know is, why haven't we visited them earlier?
Hopefully we'll get together for another bit next week or something.

Otherwise, this morning...

Roman flea market Porta Portese.
Sweat, packed, beads, junk, brushes, beautiful.
Next sunday for sure. For this week, a few treasures. Which is very nice indeed.
