we spend alot of time in the hermitage. it is enormous. we get to see hidden things too! we went to see a closed peice of the museum that is their collection of buddhist paintings and sculpture. elena is an expert on these things and told us about all of the gods in the imagery and the function of all the pottery. there was a painting of a demon looking creature that has a huge belly and a tiny neck and a scary face (big black eyes, big mouth, little round far apart from eachother teeth) holding a spoon full of rice. he is called a "hungery spirit." she told us that the buddhist people believe that when a greedy person dies he turns into one of these and that means that he is surrounded with food and "everything is fine" but he is always hungry and can never eat it because their throat is too small. there was another painting about a goddess called the white tara and there is a girl on our trip named tara white!! elena said that when she got her application she knew that our trip would be protected from harm.

some kids from emory came to our dorm to stay a few days ago and i am feeling less and less americanci in comparisson.
