my windows look into your living room

I went to two different concerts yesterday.

Weston had three tickets to the all-ages Tegan and Sara show at the Commodore in the afternoon, and he had to go to Whistler so he gave them to me, Steph, and Tams. Tamara and I got there just after four, and the opener, Northern State was playing and holy fuck they were terrible. Maybe this makes me a bad feminist, but sometimes lady rappers are just so embarrassing. It's like they have no discernable talents but still want to be famous, so they're like, 'Hey let's rhyme a bunch of stuff that doesn't make sense and throw in some bass and drums. That's music, right?' THEY RAPPED ABOUT THE THINGS THEY CAN DO (presumably for a man) AND THESE THINGS INCLUDED DOING LAUNDRY AND MAKING A SANDWICH WTF. Steph was lucky enough to have work until 4:15 so she missed them and arrived just in time for Tegan and Sara. We hung to the back of the floor though, so that we wouldn't get enraged and have me inevitably punch some 14-year-olds in the face and get kicked out.

They didn't play as much stuff from their older albums as I would have liked, but I wasn't really expecting them to, and they played spectacularly anyways. I was glad to at least hear Living Room and Where Does the Good Go. OH and in the encore they covered that Umbrella song by Rihanna and it was pretty much amazing. And I love their banter between songs. They talk more than anyone I have ever seen live, and they're hilarious.

After the show ended it was only like 6pm so we met up with Chris and Val and went across the street to Kitto for Japanese food. Outside afterwards I ran into Kim and Leigh who were going to Taf's before heading to the non-all-ages version of Tegan and Sara, so I went up to have a drink with them since I had like two hours to kill. A bunch of other girls joined them, including this very cute very awesome girl from New Zealand named Kat. I talked to her most of the time we were there, about music, Harry Potter, school, pretentious people, and oh man she is great. I got her number.

I headed down to Richard's on Richards around 9:30 to see Handsome Furs, all by myself. I didn't mind, though. The only bad thing about going to concerts alone is that I usually end up drinking a lot just to have something to do. Anyway, even though I arrived nearly an hour after doors, nothing was happening. Both of the openers, Listening Party and Johnny and the Moon were great, especially Listening Party, which was an interesting ambient/experimental-sounding band, but not in an annoying pointless way like, say, Xiu Xiu. I would have bought their cd if I hadn't spent all my dollars on a Handsome Furs shirt that has a neon yellow crab on it.

Were he not married to Alexei Perry, the other member of the Handsome Furs, I would have asked Dan Boekner to marry me. He looked like a combination of Gary Oldman as Sid Vicious and a young Mick Jagger, and was drinking directly from a bottle of wine onstage. He moved in quite a spastic way while he sang and played guitar, and I liked it. And I like how it's only the two of them but they can make it sound as though five people playing... it's like you can feel the warmth of his voice and the guitar and synth in your whole body. Weird but I don't know how else to describe it. At any rate, the show was amazing and everyone should listen to this band.
