Marini's is a famous candy store on the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. This family-owned business has been running since the early 1900s, and has been featured numerous times on various Food Network shows.
After an exciting round of pirate-themed mini-golf last month with
shadowolf,
brophey,
grimal, and
dranga, we took the chance to check out Marini's latest food-fad: Chocolate Covered Bacon.
It's World Famous, apparently!
And after trying it, I realize that anything claiming to be "World Famous" doesn't necessarily mean that there's any positive value in it whatsoever.
I expected there to be some sort of alchemy to happen when these tastes combine... something that becomes more than the sum of its parts - like what happens when you combine peanut butter and bananas, or add vanilla ice cream to root beer. But no, chocolate-covered bacon tastes exactly like it sounds... like some poor assembly-line worker at Hershey's mistakenly dropped his salty breakfast meat into the chocolate vat. It's like not having the patience for eating your dinner and dessert one after the other, so you eat them both at once, in the same mouthful. Cheesecake steak, anyone? Shepherd's pie with ice cream instead of mashed potatoes? Some things just aren't meant to go together.
