Harvey isn’t sulking. He’s much too dignified for that. He’s also not hiding. He’s simply sitting in one of his favorite spots, enjoying himself. The top of the refrigerator is warm, and high enough that he can survey his entire kingdom in one glance. The fact that it is well out of reach of a certain…nuisance, has nothing to do with his choice of location.

Jessica looks up at him, frowns, and crosses her arms. Harvey glares back imperiously, his ears tilted backwards and the tip of his tail twitching. “You’re just going to have to get used to Mike, Harvey” Jessica says. “I’m not taking him back.” Harvey turns his head away and ignores her. She sighs and walks off.

Moments later, the clicking of toenails against the kitchen tile alerts Harvey to the approach of that…thing that Jessica recently brought into his domain. Harvey peers over the edge of the refrigerator to look at it. It’s brown, furry, a little bit smaller than him, with big pointed ears that flop down and a tail that wags incessantly. It’s a puppy. And Harvey’s not happy about it being here.

He doesn’t know what Jessica was thinking. This is, after all, his house. Her purpose here is to feed him, change his litter box, and entertain him when he deigns to approach her. She has no right to bring this thing here, and Harvey wants it gone.

The puppy, Mike, Jessica said his name was, although Harvey is determined to keep referring to him as ‘it’, spots Harvey looking at him from the top of the fridge. A wide puppy grin breaks across its face. It barks up at him, tail wagging insanely. Harvey puts his ears back and makes a noise of feline displeasure, half-way between a growl and a moan. The puppy puts its front paws on the refrigerator, wavering and almost toppling in its incoordination, and barks again. Harvey hisses, his fur beginning to stand on end.

The puppy barks once more, and Harvey gets annoyed. He leaps gracefully from the refrigerator to the counter. The puppy stares up at him in awe, and Harvey jumps down next to it, almost on top of it. The startled puppy flees, falling to the ground and skidding as it tries to turn a corner, then picking itself up and running off. Harvey’s fur flattens to his skin again, and he begins to groom himself with a satisfied air.

Harvey is in his favorite chair, sunning himself, when the puppy ventures into the room. It keeps a good distance from Harvey, having learned its lesson, and Harvey merely watches it. The puppy is stretching up to look out a window when another feline figure leaps up to the ledge outside. The puppy jumps in fright and tumbles to the ground, scrambling to right itself and running a safe distance away before looking back.

It’s Louis, the neighbor’s cat, and he ignores the puppy to glare at Harvey. Harvey settles his chin back on his paws, not threatened in the least. The puppy slowly inches back to the window and looks out. Then, to Harvey’s shock, he makes a break for the cat flap in the door.  Harvey sits up, ears pricked and eyes wide. Outside he can hear the puppy barking, and then he sees Louis jump down from the ledge and disappear from view.

A hiss comes from outside, and Harvey bolts for the cat flap, slipping outside and rushing over. Mike is cowered on the ground while Louis swats at him with a paw. Louis’ fur is fluffed out so he looks twice his size, and Mike is clearly terrified. Harvey sees Louis’ claws swipe across the puppy’s nose, drawing blood and making him whimper, and without thinking Harvey launches himself at Louis.

Harvey tackles Louis to the ground and they struggle, each trying to get the upper hand. Louis throws Harvey off and rears up to scratch at his eyes, but Harvey ducks under and throws himself at Louis’ chest, knocking him down on his back and then pinning him. Louis struggles, but Harvey is stronger. It’s only when he knowingly lessens up that the other cat is able to wriggle away and run off.

Harvey watches the other cat flee for a moment, then goes back to Mike, who is still lying on the ground. Harvey sniffs at him, making sure he’s not seriously injured. Satisfied that he’s not, Harvey licks the small cuts across his nose and one of his ears, purring deep in his chest to comfort the shaken puppy. When Mike sits up and starts poking his nose into Harvey’s fur, Harvey decides that’s enough fussing. He turns and walks back towards the cat flap, slowing when Mike tries to catch up to him. They trot back to the house together.

Later that day, Harvey is once again not hiding, this time under the bed. Jessica thinks he had something to do with the scratches on Mike’s head, and wants to lock him in the bathroom as punishment. He looks up when he hears the door being pushed more widely open, but then relaxes when a familiar brown shape noses under the bed skirt.

Mike comes up to Harvey and wags his tail hopefully. Harvey purrs softly and noses his cuts, checking how they’ve scabbed over. Mike licks a wet stripe over Harvey’s face, and he pulls back in surprise. Harvey stops purring and glares at Mike before licking a paw and beginning to wash his face. When he’s done, he begins licking Mike. Someone needs to educate him in the proper method of grooming.

As he grooms Mike, Harvey begins to purr softly without thinking. Mike’s tail gently thumps the carpet beside him, and he makes a soft growling noise that Harvey realizes is an attempt at purring. Pleased with the effort, Harvey begins to purr more loudly. He might be ready to admit that maybe this new puppy isn’t so bad.
