I just got back from Japan yesterday after a 2 week trek across the urban landscape of Tokyo, the slums of Kyoto, and the beauty of beautiful northern Akita prefecture. It was wicked fun. I'll bring up points as I remember them.
-I speak Japanese a little bit, it was enough. I think I told an elderly Japanese innkeeper though that Marcus was 1000 years old.
-We were on possibly the largest Shinkansen holdup in history, our tickets were for the "inside a tunnel" section and the ride was 10 hours long.
-The Shinkansen is fast. Really fast. 186 MPH fast, and on land so you tend to feel it more. It's really quiet and comfortable. No seatbelts are on it, they aren't ever needed.
-Prada was a sweet building but the clothes were so-so, the second "so" being for "so expensive." The first one is of course for "so-so."
-Tried to find Japan soccer jersey for something reasonable, say $60? Didn't happen. Tried to find a YSL T-shirt under $200, also didn't happen. Turns out those things are water in the desert here, whereas I had thought they'd be cheaper.
-The time difference is ridiculous, it sets you almost opposite of your normal schedule. I expected that, but I didn't quite expect it enough I think.
-The Park Hyatt is posh. Really posh.
-Tokyo sometimes has, and I'm not lying, fire tornadoes.
