VT Orientation (Hint: It rocked the casba)

Jul 13, 2007 20:08

I'm back from VT, and spending what little time I have at home catching up with the world before going to Vermont for the week.

IT ROCKED THE BOAT. FRONTWAYS AND BACKWAYS.

Here be the rundown:

Arrival: We stay in a 1 1/2 star hotel- and it shows. After four hours of car ride, we get to our non-smoking room, and it's definitely smoke-smelling. So, that made things bad. Nonetheless, watched a bit of Conan O' Brian, and bed.

Day 1- The Group: We wake up, eat, and get out of Dodge. After arriving at VT, we encounter several Orientation Leaders who have had WAY too much coffee- or sugar, whatever. They jumped up and did the Hokey-Pokey (a VTech tradition, apparentaly) as we got off the bus and into the intro.
The Intro was what you might expect- "Hi, welcome, you're smart 'cause you're here, and you're here because you're smart." And then the 30 Orientation Leaders came out. And started dancing, chanting the 'Old Hokie', and introducing each other in ways I haven't seen since the Senior Showcase (read: silly and nonsensical).
My Leader was Matt Z, Group 28. When I found this out, the following conversation ensued.

Mom: Is that your leader?
Pat (Step-Dad): Why couldn't you get one of the hot girls? (Laughs)
Me: ....%@#*

We played several games, including 'Evolution' (Rock-Paper-Scissors on crack... or pot.), and the Assumption Game (it's exactly as it sounds.). Then proceeded to have lectures on Sexual Assault and Alcohol Policy. Not a fun part... until you take into accoutn that EVERYONE was reading from a script. And it sounded as cheesy as humanely possible. Like 'After-School Special' cheesy.
After that, we played the Assumption Game with another Leader, Jenny. We then proceeded to freak her out by assuming that she was a lesbian. In truth, we just did it because Matt told us too (and we didn't object).
Then, we played 'Take a Stand'. It starts simple. 'Peanut Butter or Jelly', or 'Toilet Paper- Folded or Crumpled?'. By the end, its like 'Is Being Gay a Choice or Instilled at Birth', and 'Politics: Far-Left or Far-Right?'
Before seperating, we talked briefly about the shootings. From what the Leader said, VT bonced back very quickly from the tradgedy, when other colleges still live in the shadows of their own shootings. Matt then told us the his best friend's girlfriend was among those murdered during the incident. He was crying a little bit, but his demeanor, his stance, was more couragous than tearful.
Ending the night were a bunch of skits about the rules we'd learned, in the form of commercials and shows we see nowadays.

Day 2- Driving Home:
I got to the dining hall, and threw up. That's what I get for taking my medicine BEFORE eating. More orientation stuff, and we drove home.

And that's it. I loved every moment of it. Except the part where I threw up.
