It'll never happen, or will it?

It’s been over a week since my dad decided to quit smoking. I’ve been trying to get him to lessen in my own little ways (by hiding his cigarettes hahaha), so I’m glad he finally is trying now. What I find ironic is the reason why he’s decided to quit; a good friend of his was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, and recently had an operation done on his lungs. The kicker is, the guy doesn’t even smoke. I guess my dad finally realized that something like that could happen to him. One of the first things we noticed was that his lips are now much more pink. We’re rooting him on so he can totally quit. :)

I wonder why that is though; why does it take something bad to happen before change can take place? Sometimes we become very complacent. I think most of the time we always have this idea that certain things will never happen to us (we'll never get sick, we'll never hit another car, we'll never get hacked), then these things happen near us (or to us) and we realize that it can, and then take the initiative to change. This happens to me too, though not recently. I think we'd be able to avoid so much trouble if people kept in mind that it's better to be safe than sorry.
