The Secret to Raising Smart Kids: This isn't exactly revolutionary, but I like the way it articulates the difference between the 'intelligence is innate' mindset and the 'I can do it if I keep trying' mindset. It will definitely affect how I praise achievement in the future.

Yeah, some of the stuff we train in my company is based on findings this woman's research - she's recently released a book called...um.../Mindset: The New Psychology of Success/. Prior she's released all her stuff in academic papers and the occasional magazine article. What I've found in my life is consistent with this - though this is a very Gen X approach - that the trick to life is not to always succeed (that just means you're living too small), but to be able to deal powerfully with failure.

There's a common expression among my rock-climbing friends. "If you don't slip, you're not trying hard enough." (This is the sort of rock-climbing where ropes and stuff are involved, so if you slip you still live to climb another day)
