Spiderman III Advance Screening. Movie piracy = drug dealing and terrorism.

The experience:

The line was largish and there were many security personnel. We chatted merrily to a lady who wondered what all the fuss about the mobile telephones was - we had cleverly left ours in the car but still had the joy of being scanned from head to toe (cupidsbow is a cyborg, it took them ages).

I had the opportunity to watch people react to the scanning wands - almost everyone automatically assumes The Position.

We chatted about bestiality, what constitutes informed consent, Peter Singer and his article Heavy Petting [NOT WORK SAFE. REALLY.] and I was most of the way through the cow / pumpkin / cowboy boots story via the dolphin story when I realised we were surrounded by young boys and derailed. Oh god; please let them not remember.

A nervous sounding lady welcomed everyone to the movie and explained that the mobiles had been confiscated due to recording devices being used to pirate movies; the profits of which go to DRUG DEALING AND TERRORISM. When the crowd giggled she said “No, no don’t laugh, it’s true.’

The movie:

Spiderman III was long, badly paced and composed of many, many disparate plot elements that were not well integrated. It wasn’t self aware enough to be funny and had some action sequences that relied heavily on the handi-cam effect. The movie alternated between slow, teary-eyed schmoop and insane violence which didn’t translate well. The triumphant Spiderman in front of the American flag moment nearly had me barfing on my shoes.

It did however, have J. K. Simmons whose comic timing was excellent, James Franco who is unbelievably chiselled, Tobey Maguire as evil_Peter while dancing in a jazz club and Bruce Campbell playing an adorably over the top French Maitre D’. There was also excellent CGI, the Sandman forming for the first time was particularly good as was Venom all the way through. The Goblin/Spiderman fight sequences were violent and spectacular and I thoroughly enjoyed them.
