Aurelio Alain Marquez de Callas
“Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“To play safe, I prefer to accept only one type of power: the power of art over trash, the triumph of magic over the brute” ~ Vladimir Nabokov

PERSONALITY
”Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards,
for they are subtle and quick to anger.” - Tolkein

Aurelio can best be described as having the wisdom of the ages and the impulse control of a teenager. He is loyal, a hard worker, smart, quick with a joke, and generous. But he is also wrathful, self-involved, clumsy, and has serious boundary issues.

HISTORY
“Never ever doubt in Magic. The purest honest thoughts come from children,
ask any child if they believe in magic and they will tell you the truth.” ~ Scott Dixon

For Aurelio, magic is everything. And has been since he was a baby. Instead of Doctor Seuss, Aurelio's parents read incantations to him as a toddler. Instead of fairy tales, Aurelio learned the secret magic history of the world. The solar system mobile that hung above his crib sang with the actual music of the spheres. And from the first, Aurelio was able to hear that music. And to sing back to it.

He was still quite young when his parents - notable sorcerers in their own right - discovered that their son had remarkable ability. Aurelio was able to see and hear the invisible patterns and harmonies that made up the why of the universe. He could decipher obscure cause and effect, understand complex motivations and suss out why things happened. Aurelio's parents realized that this meant he was capable of a rare form of mysticism: chance magic.
Aurelio grew in the tutelage of his parents, learning everything he could about magic. They made sure he went to an earthly school - they had seen, first hand, how dangerous a wizard unconnected to the “real world” could be - but the other hours of his day were absorbed by magic. This was made all the easier by his parents' magic shop, where they sold trinkets to the unsuspecting public but had their real calling in supplying wizards of the Right with the supplies and support necessary to carry on the fight. As a child, he spent his afternoons and evenings at the foot of the great good wizards of the city. As a youth and young man, his leisure at the store turned gradually to work, but he never minded. He loved it. The smells, the conversation, the tutelage of his parents and their friends. All the while, he honed his magic abilities. By the time he was sixteen, he was able to accompany his parents on some of their adventures.

At eighteen, when he graduated high school, Aurelio began to attend a local college as an art and music double-major. The expression of his magic came mostly through music, and color. So, naturally, art and music were great interests of his. Or was it the other way around? Aurelio was never sure and eventually came to not care very much. All he knew is that he was good at painting, good at music, and very good at magic. The world, in general, was good.

Until, at 22, very shortly after he graduated from college, his parents died. In a car crash. It was unheard of for wizards to die in a car crash. And in the rare occasions they did, there was almost always some secret behind it. Sure enough, Aurelio could see the patterns that led to their demise as he stood at the crime scene. Except, those patterns had not existed when he had had breakfast with his parents that morning. They couldn't have been. He would have seen them, changed them. He knew. Someone had changed them. Someone else. There was another chance magician out there. He had never met one, never even heard of a living one. But there was one out there. And he had killed Aurelio's parents.

Aurelio inherited the magic shop, and the house. He could not bear to either sell or live in the house, so he had it boarded up. However, the magic shop needed tending. He could not let his parents' dreams die. So he set about the business of running it, moving into the tiny apartment above it that his parents had lived in before he was born, before they had been able to afford a home. He lives there to this day, four years later, running the shop and doing good magic and still trying to find his parents' killer.

MAGICAL ABILITY
"…occasionally Pythagoras draws on the theory of music,
and designates the distance between the Earth and the Moon as a whole tone, that between the Moon and Mercury as a semitone,
.... the seven tones thus producing the so-called diapason, i.e. a universal harmony." ~ Pliny the Elder

As a chance magician, Aurelio is capable of sensing and manipulating the patterns that make things happen. The world is a constant blur of light and sound and smell to him, letting him know what's going to happen next. And by changing the music, or altering the picture, he can make the outcome different. Most of the time.

Because the use of this power can take concentration and subtlety, Aurelio has taken it upon himself to learn several simple spells, for dangerous occasions. These include an easy shielding spell, a basic “throw object” spell, and an energy bolt. His abilities in this direction are not nearly as powerful as a typical magician might cast, since Aurelio's talents are so specialized.
