Rise S12: Revamping South-East Sheffield
If you live in South-East Sheffield there’s a good chance you’ve noticed the Rise S12 project. The Scowerdons estate is changing dramatically, with old, flat roofed houses being demolished weekly and brand new two, three and four bedroom homes taking their places. An estate full of contemporary sustainable homes boasting breath-taking views of the Shire Brook Valley is taking shape, with phase one due to complete over the Summer of 2011. The estate comprises of 106 new homes, with a whopping eleven different styles of property to choose from and with options of shared ownership, outright purchase or rental. Each of these homes claims sustainable homes status, with measures such as rainwater butts, compost bins and solar powered hot water systems being taken to reduce energy consumption, thus cutting residents bills and reducing their carbon footprints. In addition to this each new resident is provided with a welcome pack advising how to be more environmentally friendly, with information about walking, cycling and bus routes in the area.
As of June 2011, fifteen new homes have been released for sale and the four bedroom ‘Mallow’ model has been opened up as a second show home. The show homes have seen hundreds of visitors through their doors and indeed many of the properties on the estate are now occupied.

Frecheville Pond - Beauty Spot or Youth Hangout?
Recently Frecheville Pond has had a makeover, and there’s no doubting the Friends of Frecheville Park and Pond have done a fantastic job of transforming it from overgrown and neglected to serene, attractive and safe.
Sadly the local residents know only too well that the pond has a dark side. As attractive as it is to families and children during the daytime, come evening it draws the youth of the area and becomes a hangout for teen drinkers causing noise disturbances and adding to the ongoing litter problem. Residents say they have been advised to contact the police when this happens and these youths will be (and have been) moved on.

Birley More Shops
Birley Moor Road has long had a mixed selection of village shops, with newsagents, cafes, grocers, bakers, hairdressers and more. The latest addition comes in the form of a new building replacing the old Texaco petrol station. The unit is made up of retail units with flats above and parking in the surrounding area. Tesco Express was the first to open up their unit giving us further options for grocery shopping with late opening hours every day of the week. As of July the unit also homes a Barnardo’s charity shop and a local branch of the Vets4Pets chain.

Nelson Rock Bar - Grand re-opening
The Nelson Rock Bar is a memorable sight if you’ve ever been past it or inside it, Ozzy Osbourne looming over you and wall to wall red and black. Recently though, The Prince of Darkness has vanished from its walls.
A few weeks ago the Nelson closed its doors for a refurbishment, leaving regulars and staff wondering about the future of the city centre bar.
This week though, we are cordially invited to celebrate the Grand Re-opening. More intriguing maybe is the fact our invitations come from “Four Mystery Rockers”. The rumour mill has many suggestions but who are the elusive new owners?
Well, if you’re as curious as I am then you’ll just have to head to the opening night, Friday, 12th August at 7:30pm. See you there!
