Every character starts with an idea. Where you go from there is unique to you, the player.
How do YOU create a new character from scratch? Do you have any rituals, a step-by-step guide?
Tell us about your character creation process, from vague idea to ready-to-write.
I've only ever really played canon characters, even if they are not entirely fleshed out in their source material. In writing Máire, I have a fairly good basis for her environment and her personality and just enough of her back story to give me room to wiggle and still be in character. I also have a lot of area to play with in terms of her children and marriage which are all mentioned in the book's epilogue but not in any great detail.
They aren't new characters by any means, but they have tended to be 'from scratch' in a lot of ways. Máire speaks about her children often so of course they have distinct personalities of their own as well as common factors that identify them as being related and closely knit. To do this I've basically kept in mind the time period, the country and the socio-political (as well as religious, which are often one and the same for Máire) issues at work that would have shaped not only my character but her family as well. I also draw on my own experiences as a parent to round out the things the boys say or do.
I think if I did create a character completely from scratch I'd ask myself many of those same questions when trying to shape who these people would be.
