Another day goes by and all I see are these four white walls. Padded walls of Bell Reve. Many nights I lay awake staring at the ceiling listening to the man in the room down the hall screaming. He screams that he is dead. I’m not quite sure what he means by dead but I can only assume he really is crazy and is not one of us so called meteor freaks.

A meteor freak is someone who was affected by the meteor shower in Smallville so many years ago. I would prefer to be called a mutant; it sounds so much better than freak. Chloe Sullivan never picked up on me until one day at lunch sophomore year.

She had been trying to talk me into doing an interview for the Torch. Something about getting to know the goth at Smallville High. I was trying to refuse politely, abandoning my table, as I turned around and walked right through the cafeteria wall. That was when she decided to write an exposé instead of interviewing me.

Since I can walk through walls I can leave anytime I want, but I don’t. I stay in Bell Reve because it is safer in here. By safe I mean that no one will try to take and experiment on me. No one will stick needles in and dissect me. At least so far they haven’t tried.

Pulling the blanket over my head I rolled over and tried to sleep. His screams were louder than before. I sat up, throwing the blanket aside, and screamed with frustration. I walked through the door and headed down the hall to his room. I looked through the window to see him rocking back and forth on the floor insisting he was dead. Wounds covered his face; presumably self inflicted.

Just as I was turning to go back to my own padded walls I heard a guard behind me. “Hey! How did you get out?”

I froze, uncertain of what to do. None of the guards knew of my ability. I heard him pull out his metal baton. “I asked you a question.” He was only inches behind me; I could feel him breathing down my neck. Not wanting to be beaten like so many others for getting out I ran through the screaming mans door.

The man was no longer screaming but staring at me, his large brown eyes wide with wonder as he looked me over. I heard the guard calling for backup and decided to get back to my own room before they arrived. Running past the man sitting on the floor, I went right through the wall and ended up in my own padded cell once more.

Now that one of the guards had seen me I was no longer safe.
