It is something people have been searching for since Philosophy was created. Socrates, Pluto, even Shakespeare put their two cents into the mix.
I have looked into the meaning of life myself and have never seemed to understand it. Perhaps there is no real meaning at all. Perhaps the meaning of life is that it ends. If that is the case…perhaps the meaning goes a little deeper. Maybe it is that we all must enjoy our lives. Perhaps we should experience everything we can, while we can….or maybe…the meaning of life is everything…just, everything
I believe we do not take the time to notice the black and yellow butterfly sitting on the lilac rummaging for that little bit of nectar. We are so busy with ourselves that we don’t take the time to look around and notice the little beauties that are all around us.
Have you ever seen the look in the eyes of a new born baby as they see the world for the first time? Could you imagine what it must be like to experience all of this for the first time…how marvelous it must feel to have your breath taken away by the sheer beauty of a red moon draped behind a series of trees on a mountaintop or to feel the Pennsylvania grass between your bare feet.
We meet at least ten people a day. We casually walk by them as we catch a bus. How many times do we actually take the time to smile at a passer by? How many times do we actually start a conversation with a random person we sit next to on the bus or in a class?
Before you know it…we’re going to start having our own kids. I hope that if/when I have kids…well, I hope I just appreciate them. I hope that I look at them everyday and just see how amazing they truly are.
…and when I get old. I hope that I remember all of what I’ve learned. I hope that I can look into the eyes of all of you and know that we all lived a full life…experiencing all that we could. I hope that I have no regrets.
…and when I die….I wonder how I will be remembered. I wonder what people will think of when they hear my name. I hope I die with a smile...so that all the world…all my friends and my family know that I loved them and that they made me the happiest person ever…
Perhaps we should take five minutes out of our lives to just….sit….look around….take a deep breath….
Perhaps that is the true meaning of life….
In conclusion, I believe the meaning of life is ultimately that it does end. It was once said that “The gods envy us because we are mortal. Everyday could be our last and so everything looks so much better. The grass is greener, the air so much more fulfilling.” Death is not so much a punishment as it is a blessing.
"Life is full of horror; nobody escapes, nobody; save yourself. Whatever pulls on you, whatever needs from you, threatens you. Don't be afraid; people are so afraid; don't be afraid to live in the raw wind, naked, alone... Learn at least this: What you are capable of. Let nothing stand in your way."
