Itchy scalp from twists?

Feb 13, 2011 12:02

So, I just put my hair in twists two days ago because I needed a change and I'm still trying REALLY HARD to stick to my goal of going two years without going crazy and chopping all my hair off (which normally is an annual event (I have about two months to go by the way, unless I decide to tack on another two months to counter the minor haircut/shaping session I had in Oct)).

The problem is, whenever I twist or braid my hair, my scalp gets super itchy. Like almost painfully so. I oiled my scalp before I twisted, but it's been only two days, and I feel like my head shouldn't be complaining as much as it is already. I have dry skin anyway, but since I usually wet my hair and scalp whenever I take a shower, my scalp seems to stay less irritated.

I guess I'd like to know:

1.) is this itchy head business normal? What could be causing it?
2.) what can I do to alleviate the itching? I've used a leave-in with tea tree oil in the past, but it only helped for a little bit, and I found myself spraying my head near constantly.
3.) what can I do to maintain a healthy scalp so this problem is minimized in the future? I've heard some people say you should give up oil entirely, others that you should just avoid things like petroleum and mineral oils...maybe I should drink more water?
4.) any advice you could sling at me in regard to this issue. Have at it.

I really like having the twists in because it's a change from my little afro, and change keeps me from doing stupid things like shaving my head, which I tend to regret a month or so later. Plus it's an easy way to give my hair a break and protect my ends, which is kind of important now that I've got the most length I've had in a while. But I can't keep doing braids and twists if it continues to make my head feel like there are tiny people with pick axes mining for diamonds in my scalp.

Help me please <3
