Does anyone do their own braids?

I want to get box braids or twists but i'm afraid to go to an African braiding salon because I hate sitting all that time in the chair (and they are so rough on my edges..)

So for those of you who do your own braids/twists, can you give me some tips? What hair should I buy? Any good internet tutorials? How long does it take for you to do it yourself? Upkeep/how long do they last?
