Yuletide Letter 2012

Oct 19, 2012 23:58

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you for writing for me! I want to say first that if you've already got a great idea for what you're going to write, then please feel free to ignore the rest of this. Tell me a story you're excited about, and I'll be excited too :)

But if (like me) you work better with some ideas, or you'd like to know why I'm interested in these particular fandoms, then there's some more information below.

Things I love to see
- competent people being awesome
- snark/witty banter/people talking to each other rather than keeping secrets for no reason
- women being awesome
- ensembles
- unconventional relationship dynamics
- unconventional declarations of affection
- trust issues/overcoming trust issues
- found families/building a home/putting the work in
- earning your happy ending
- playing with cliches/tropes in interesting ways
- AUs/dystopias/fusions/crossovers (for crossovers, obviously as long as the primary fandom is the Yuletide one, and preferably with another fandom I know)
- gen, het, slash or femslash; pairings, threesomes, poly or none
- holiday stories are welcome but not necessary
- kink wise: cross-dressing, genderplay, bondage, blindfolds, obedience, frustration, desperation, power dynamics, hurt-comfort [ETA: There does not have to be any sex in the story! But given that I am requesting Lost Girl, it may be a possibility, and these are some of the things I like in porny fic. Still not a requirement!]

Things it might be safer to avoid
- rape/non-con (I'm fine with some consent issues e.g. made-them-do-it or magical aphrodisiac, but not non-con please)
- infidelity (again, informed poly or open relationships are more than fine)
- character embarrassment/humiliation
- character bashing
- character death
- kink wise: not such a fan of heavy D/s or slavery, vore, scat, humiliation, ageplay, possessive behaviour/jealousy.

Ace of Cakes RPF - Geof Manthorne, Duff Goldman
I would love anything with Geof and his relentless pursuit of technical perfection and how that fits with Duff and his relentless pursuit of cakes that light up, spin, or explode… Anything that gives Geof an opportunity to dole out some deadpan snark and Duff an opportunity to enthuse loudly would be great. If you want to write slash I would be entirely cool with that, but I would be equally cool with friendship fic amongst bakery shenanigans.

[Some of this is copied from last year.] I don't need slash here (though feel free to write it) but the relationship between Geof and Duff definitely intrigues me. I love that Geof was making architectural models before the bakery, and that he wants things to be right. I love that when he's told to make a showpiece he decides he needs to make Notre Dame... Did I mention my competency kink? And he's deadpan and quietly snarky and tells jokes with a weirdly earnest expression.

And then there's Duff ;) Duff who once spent a whole to-camera section comparing Geof to a sports-car ("When I work with Geof, my work is good, because like Geof is perfect. And if I'm working with Geof, I can't let Geof down... This car was like Geof. It was so slick. Understated, chill, nice curves, real suave. Just like Geof. Nice curves. *laughs*"). Duff who gets completely heart-eyed watching Geof make music. Duff likes putting explosives into things or making them spin, but he's conversely the only one trained in baking, and he's in charge when he needs to be. I love the way the two of them work together, and how amused Duff is when Geof jokes with him. Any story you want to tell with the two of them, blending their different working methods, would make me very happy. (I do know that 'in real life' Duff has just opened another bakery in LA, and if you want to reference that, please do - tell me what it's like now Geof's in charge more often?) Tell me what it was like when they first started. Or give me a cake-tastrophe, or a big event, or general bakery wackiness. Send them on another cake road-trip. If you want to write a crossover, go ahead and do that! (I don't know - a cake celebrating the Avengers saving New York, or Sam Seaborn's election win?) Also, outside of what we get in the show, and the odd interview, I don't know any real life personal information about the two of them, so don't feel like you have to check every detail on that front if you don't want to.

Gravity Falls - Dipper Pines, Mabel Pines
Anything at all in the world of Gravity Falls with the Pines twins would make me very happy. Maybe you'd like to write a sci-fi/fantasy trope we haven't seen on the show yet, or maybe it's a day where nothing strange happens and Mabel and Dipper need to create their own scheme to keep themselves amused? I love the way these two are always there for each other, and how their fights don’t just happen for no reason, so anything about their awesome sibling relationship would be great.

This is my latest shiny, which my brother cunningly managed to get me into by mentioning the magic words 'time-travel episode' (he knows my Kryptonite). I just love how smart this show is, and how genre-savvy, and how warm-hearted. I love Dipper and Mabel's relationship, and the way they're fictional siblings who don't hate each other for no reason. Individually, I love Dipper's determination matched with his neuroses and list-making. Mabel just makes me smile every time she's onscreen - I love her openness, and the way she puts her whole heart into things. And her silliness.

If you'd like some ideas, there are some great tropes the show hasn't done yet that could be fun? I'd really like to see how parallel universes would go down in Gravity Falls. Or invisibility/telepathy/other super-powers. Maybe Mabel really does get a vampire boyfriend? For this request, I would rather not have anything explicitly violent or sexual, but the show can be pretty creepy at times (Gideon in Little Dipper freaked me out more than anything I've seen in 'grown up' TV lately) so don't feel the fic has to be light all the way through.

Lost Girl - Bo, Kenzi, Dyson
Some of my favourite parts of the show are the scenes where these three are being domestic and/or heroic together, so I would love to see some more of that. If you want to write it as a threesome, that would be cool, as would Bo/Dyson with Kenzi friendship, or all three of them being friends. Alternatively, I love the weird and wonderful world of the fae, so any kind of case-fic investigating a fae we haven't met before would also be awesome.

There's a scene in (Dis)Members Only where Bo and Dyson are being coupley on the couch, Kenzi comes in exhausted and demands footrubs, flings herself on the couch with her legs across Bo's lap, and Dyson starts to rub her feet. That may be my favourite moment in the whole show. The three of them are so relaxed with each other, comfortable in each other's company, and obviously protective to the death. Where the show occasionally frustrates me is where either people lie to each other for no reason or where it - in a show which is/should be all about how sex and love and life is complicated and amazing and for sharing - still tries to boil down the main drama into whether Bo picks Dyson or Lauren. So if you want to write poly fic where Bo picks Dyson and Kenzi (and Lauren if you like) or all at once, that would be cool. Or fic where they discuss these things like adults? Or just fic where Bo and Dyson and Kenzi are touchy-feely and in each other's space, having each other's backs. Send them off on a case together or send Bo and Kenzi in to rescue Dyson (again). Anything you want to do with the three of them would be fab.

In terms of the individual characters, I admire Bo for her insistence on choosing her own path and the way she'll stand up to either dark or light fae. I love how she goes after what she wants and the way she claims Kenzi as hers without a second thought. For Dyson, I wish he would share a little more and brood a little less, but I love him when he's dragged into the ridiculous messes Bo and Kenzi cause, I love when he has to admit that they matter to him, and I love when he smiles. Kenzi, I pretty much love everything about, but especially her line in snark, her refusal to be cowed by anyone, her taste in wigs, and the way she stays to fight even when it's probably going to get her killed one day. The relationship she has with Dyson independently of the one either of them have with Bo is really sweet. I love them all individually and together.

The Unusuals - Casey Shraeger, Jason Walsh, Allison Beaumont, Henry Cole
I love everything about Casey and Walsh's partnership, Beaumont and Cole's partnership, and Beaumont and Walsh's relationship. I think it could be interesting to have a case investigated by both sets of partners, or anything that looks at the two partnerships side-by-side. But I would also love anything about the tentative trust we see developing between Casey and Walsh as they get to know each other, or maybe just an even weirder than usual day in the Second Precinct. (Feel free to use a subset of the four characters if you prefer.)

I realise I nominated four characters here, but you really shouldn't feel you have to use all four. One of the things I love about the show is all the different permutations of relationships, and I think it's good to see two male-female partnerships, one with a female younger partner and one with a male, and neither of which are played as will-they-won't-they. One interesting story I thought might be something which compares-contrasts the two partnerships, maybe through a case or maybe just through a discussion at the bar.

That said, that's just one idea. I really love Casey and Walsh's relationship, and how it develops over the course of the show. I would love to see how that might change further down the line, or if there are still secrets Jason is keeping. If you ship Casey/Walsh, I'm not averse to that as long as it respects Allison, but I also think Allison and Walsh are great together. I would have loved to see Allison and Casey get more time together as friends - maybe one day they have to get Walsh out of trouble together? For Cole, I like how he's more relaxed around Beaumont than around anyone else, and that he's willing to bend the rules a little to cheer her up. They're clearly as devoted to each other in their own way as Casey and Walsh are, and I wish we could have seen some more fallout from Cole's secret-keeping and how they would have eventually got past what happened if Allison found out. But basically I love the whole tone of the show, and all the weird cases going on around them, so anything in the spirit of the show will make me very happy.

Mostly, as I said at the top, write the story you want to be writing, and I'm sure I'll love it. Have a good Yuletide, and I'll see you on the other side :)
