Yuletide 2011 recs

Dec 30, 2011 19:51

I've been working my way through the archives now I'm back - still many fics to read but I'm not going to have time to make another post before reveal. (I may be behind on my word count for this year, and have a few fics to finish to make up for it.

So these are mostly fics that I haven't seen recced elsewhere, or at least that you may have missed. Quite a few from Madness, and a few shorter ones. Plus a few that you can read with no knowledge of canon.

The World's Wife - Carol Ann Duffy - no canon required
This is one of the fandoms I requested this year, and the first one is my gift. It's also one of those Yuletide fandoms you don't need to know to enjoy. The World's Wife is a poetry collection with poems written from the perspective of a mixture of historical and mythological women, the wives/partners of historical and mythological men, and some of these men rewritten as women. They're funny, feminist and definitely worth a read. But you can read these first :)

Second thoughts (1100 words) by Anonymous
General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: Three snippets: one is a sort of response to "The Little Red-Cap", two are written in the spirit of the collection; one is a poem, two are not.
This is the one written for me. You can tell because of how it has fairytales :) It's thoughtful, and there's a bit of a running theme of what we make as women, what we learn from other woman and what we leave behind. (The first section is based off Little Red-Cap, and it might help to read that one, but it's not necessary.)

A Daughter of the American (Psycho) Revolution, via the Lineage of Marion Crane (645 words) by Anonymous
Mature | Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Summary: Bad things happen to girls who want too much.
This one is angrier, and very sharp. It's in the style of the poetry collection, from the perspective of one of those beautiful girls who turns up in the horror movie to scream and die, and some of the lines are still running around my head.

Never Let Me Go (2010)
Letting Go (1062 words) by Anonymous
Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Original Characters
Summary: Near Hailsham School, a woman is arrested for theft.
This is some really interesting world-building for Never Let Me Go, addressing one of the issues in the film/book.

Black Books
Massacre of the Innocents (558 words) by Anonymous
General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Fran Katzenjammer, Bernard Black, Manny Bianco
Summary: The morning after the night before, the gang have some qualms about all those dead jelly babies.
This is a tiny one, but the voices are great, and it made me giggle loads.

Phineas and Ferb
Ringing in a New Year (3492 words) by Anonymous
Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Vanessa Doofenshmirtz/Ferb Fletcher, Phineas Flynn/Isabella Garcia-Shapiro
Characters: Phineas Flynn, Ferb Fletcher, Vanessa Doofenshmirtz, Isabella Garcia-Shapiro, Buford van Stomm, Baljeet Rai
Summary: Not even the greatest childhoods can last forever
This is the Phineas and Ferb fic I didn't know I wanted - Ferb is 16, going to school on his own for the first time, and struggling with that adolescent melancholy of the world changing around him. Everyone's really in character, and there's gorgeous Vanessa/Ferb.

Dollhouse
Rendering (552 words) by Anonymous
General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Topher Brink, Adelle DeWitt
Summary: Topher will gift parts of himself once, perhaps best, left closed to Adelle.
Another short one from Madness, but this is great Topher and Adelle. And lends a really interesting slant on what Topher thinks is going on in Epitaph 1+2

Downton Abbey
The Ballot (621 words) by Anonymous
General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Violet Crawley
Summary: It was surpassingly difficult to know what one should wear to cast a ballot.
I love the quiet triumph in this, and Violet does affronted dignity like no one else.

Marvel Adventures: Avengers - specific continuity knowledge not required.
Share Something Exciting (2854 words) by Anonymous
Not Rated | Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Hank Pym/Janet Van Dyne
Characters: Hank Pym, Janet Van Dyne
Summary: Hank, Janet, and falling in love.
Janet is Giant Girl, Hank is a scientist with a special interest in insects. And this is Marvel fic where nothing bad happens. Really. Janet is enthusiastic and knows what she wants; Hank likes her right back, and no one is punished for this. Clearly I need to read more Marvel Adventures.

Captain America (2011)
Vigil (728 words) by Anonymous
General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers
Characters: Peggy Carter, Howard Stark
Summary: Written for this prompt: "On the first anniversary of Captain America's death, the Howling Commandos get rip-roaring drunk. Ten days later, on the anniversary of the day Steve Rogers didn't keep their date, Peggy Carter goes back to the Stork Club. She doesn't dance." Written for Yuletide Madness 2011.
Peggy, who is strong enough to mourn the way she chooses.

Bolt (2008)
Belong to You (4927 words) by Anonymous
General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Mittens (Bolt), Bolt (Bolt), Rhino (Bolt), Penny (Bolt), Penny's Mom (Bolt)
Summary: When Penny and Bolt are asked to participate in a reunion special back in Hollywood, Mittens worries about her place in their lives.
I am a cat person, so Mittens is of course my favourite. This is very sweet, with enough of that sadness in the middle to balance it out, and the voices are great.

Now, off to tackle some of the sections in main Yuletide I haven't touched yet. Community, Downton and Diana Wynne Jones books, I'm talking to you. (If you're looking for Avengers movie fics, a bunch of people have already recced those on Yuletide, and I'm too tired now to repeat them. But I do really like the Clint/Darcy one.)
