I was just using a basic (2002ish) DVD player in Progressive mode hooked up to my Samsung 46" 550 series. The TV registered the 720p signal and did it's magic to make it full screen.
I've since swapped it out with a PS3 which does upconversion to 1080p, and I can't say I noticed a significant improvement... However the PS3 does do a better job of going 4:3 when necessary more often, meaning I don't have to fiddle with the TV as much in those cases.
I guess it just depends on the quality of the electronics involved.
True, and honestly, i grabbed my roomies basic dvd player and noticed it seemed sharper, so I'll look into it, completely shot over my head that it might do up converting. But the real reason i want to get mine back is cause i hacked the region code in it so its' open region!
It's definitely on the inexpensive side of things, and the difference between 720 to 1080 isn't a bunch, the real way i notice it is when i get my computer hooked up to it. And i really enjoy the PS3's multimedia capabilities, the slide show is best I've seen out of any program.
