Swamp Devil
Year: 2008
Score: 7/10
Bottom Line: Try it - you'll like it!
My Thoughts:
Ahhh. My first review of 2010. I found that I couldn't resist a movie with such a descriptive and downright AWESOME title.
I really went into this one with low expectations. There was one recognizable name in the cast (Bruce Dern) and that was about it. I was pleasantly surprised with what I was given.
The story? Something is killing the locals in the swamps of Gibbington and ex-sheriff Howard Blaime (Bruce Dern) is the most likely suspect. Lured back to her hometown on false pretenses, Howard's estranged daughter Melanie (Cindy Sampson) gets drawn into trying to prove her father's innocence. As the bodies begin to pile up, Melanie has to decide who to trust and what to believe.
I thought Cindy Sampson was very good. I can't think of a single time she overplayed her role. She brought something to what could have very easily been a one-dimensional character that positively made her shine. Nicolas Wright, as the local guy trying to help, was also quite good. A little creepy, but still good.
Yes, some of the plot is very predictable. There were things I saw coming from a mile away. Did it detract from the movie itself? Not really. For the most part that was because Cindy Sampson was such a delight to watch.
Now, the Swamp Devil itself is pretty cheesy. Not necessarily in a good way. Once again, I was able to overlook that because of the performances the actors turned in.
All in all, a good late night movie that I watched in one sitting.
