My Thoughts:
This movie is not as bad as I was led to believe. In fact, I was more than mildly entertained by it. Of course, I'm a sucker for a zombie movie, but this one still holds up better than some.
The story? Based on the House of the Dead video games, a group of college age (I think) kids head out to the Rave of the Year in the San Juan islands. It turns out that the island this rave is being held on is crawling with the wicked undead. Five of the kids miss the ferry out to the island and have to charter a boat which happens to be captained by a smuggler who happens to be carrying a metric buttload of weaponry. Coincidence? I think not. Surely it's a sign that they are meant to survive the night. Or, you, know, die horribly. Whatever.
I've never played the games, but you get enough screenshots of the games woven throughout the movie to get the general idea. Zombies. Shoot. Kill. Head shots not required.
Things that always work in zombie movies:
a tender moment between anyone in the middle of zombie carnage.
severed limbs.
backstory involving a Spanish pirate and his "unholy experiments".
someone getting bitten and no one mentioning that they're going to be zombified mighty soon.
severed heads that turn and blink.
kick-ass girls who can do high flying leaps while swinging a machete/knife.
Oh, this movie had all that and more. Although my favorite thing was the nearly unending supply of ammo that these guys had on hand. Those are people that I want with me during a zombie attack. I'm just saying.
So, in no way will this ever be the best zombie movie made. Shaun of the Dead holds that honor in my book. Heck, the dialogue alone drops this a couple of pegs on the Richter scale. There's also little in the way of scary tension. Sure, things jump out every once in a while, but nothing that had me cowering under the blankets.
Go in for the carnage and you'll come out happy. Or at least slightly bloodied.
