Bottom Line: Try it - you'll like it!
My Thoughts:
I don't know why, but I find myself strangely drawn to Ryan Gosling. I don't find him particularly attractive or anything; but I will watch ANY movie with him in it if given the chance.
Now you know my real reason for wanting to watch this movie. But the movie did surprise me. I was SO GLAD I had everything figured out 30 seconds after it happened. Seriously! The best part was watching Gosling's character, Willy, figure it out.
Anthony Hopkins plays Ted, this guy who discovers his wife is cheating on him. So, what does he do? He shoots her, of course! Not only does he confess, but he confesses to the cop who she is having the affair with! Keep in mind the cop didn't know who his little tryst was married to until he walked into that house after the shooting. He and Ted's wife called each other Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Once Ted confessed (he wrote it out and signed it, too!), it's discovered that the gun confiscated at Ted's, and owned by Ted, was never fired. But, but, but!? Yeah, not all that confusing while you're watching.
And now we come to the point where we learn Ted's wife didn't die. She's just put in a coma. So, Ted goes on trial for attempted murder. He opts to defend himself, and young hotshot DA Willy, who is courting a large lawfirm job to the point of not caring about the prosecutor's office, is made to start on the case.
So, Willy has a hard time trying to convict Ted, as he is saying the cop forced him to make the confession because he was having the affair with Ted's wife. Willy is given time to get new evidence, because in his heart of hearts, he knows Ted did it. But, well, that doesn't exactly work out.
I don't want to give too much away because some people may not pick everything up like I did so early on. It's probly better that you don't so that you're surprised - there haven't been a lot of movies that have surprised me - ever - but that's another discussion *smile*
