sharl “Well,” said the peach with rugged breath, obviously had been running to the scene, “this is bad.”
Kyuhyun blinked at the leader of the MIB, still confused on what the hell was happening. He looked down at the thing on his hand then back at the peach as he pointed with his other hand at the cursed culprit- his twin brother who also happened to be his very partner. “It was Agent Changmin!”
“I figured as much. No one else would carelessly raid my fridge.”
“Excuse me, Agent Junsu, your fault for having the reputation of storing delicious gifts from ambassadors of whatever planets.” Changmin shrugged nonchalantly, as if the strawberry hadn’t just raise alarm in the whole base from letting an alien loose. Said alien rocketed outside the moment Changmin opened the fridge, floated out of reach and out of sight before somehow found its way to the palm of the unsuspecting Kyuhyun who was diligently writing reports on his latest missions. Changmin had showed up a moment afterwards, grinned apologetically at him with a mumbled ‘oops’ before Junsu followed him into the room. “Also, Kyuhyun’s fridge was locked,” Changmin added.
“Because you always stole my cakes,” Kyuhyun glared at him.
“Stingy.”
“Fat ass.”
“You’re one to talk!”
“This is really, really bad.” Suddenly, Junsu was next to Kyuhyun, examining the alien on his palm, now completely still despite the swift speed it possessed seconds earlier. “It’s orange.”
“Of course it’s orange, it’s a fucking carrot,” Changmin snorted. Junsu didn’t even bother with him and slowly pressed his finger onto the large, bright orange carrot on Kyuhyun’s palm. Kyuhyun gasped as the spot Junsu touched gradually turn pale, then rotten. Yet the spot turned fresh again the instant Junsu took his finger away.
“Well, no choice,” Junsu sighed. “I don’t know why, but it had chosen you, Agent Kyuhyun. You’re the only one who can touch it.”
“Huh? Chosen? What?”
“Your new mission is to take care of this carrot for the next two weeks.”

“I’m a fucking MIB agent and I signed up to protect Planet Parfait, not to become a babysitter,” Changmin said for the umpteenth time within the span of two days.
Kyuhyun slammed the brake of the car, not caring that they were in the middle of the Caramel Bridge. Cars honked past them but Kyuhyun was too pissed off at his twin to care about everything else.
“First! Who told you to be such a gluttonous strawberry? Second, you’re not even the one who has to carry it all the time! Third, none of this would’ve happened if you just work up the courage to actually ask Junsu out on a date instead of seeking his attention in the worst, most childish ways possible!”
Changmin flushed, his strawberry head grew into a deeper shade of red. “It’s not like I was paying attention to that strange peach butt!”
“...Of course he has a peach butt. He’s a peach.”
“He’s still a peach butt!”
“You’re pathetic.” Kyuhyun looked away with a scowl, focusing on driving the car instead. His sour expression should’ve told Changmin that it was time for him to at least apologize for the mess he caused, but the younger strawberry had the maturity of a five year-old.
“…How did I know that he would keep such important thing inside that poor excuse of a container?”
“Shut up.”
“…Also, the fridge? If MIB didn’t have the proper facility to store it, they shouldn’t have agreed to help the Veggie Kingdom-.”
“I said shut up.”
“…The least he could do was locking his fridge. You know, like you. That’s a smart preventive act-.”
Five minutes later, Changmin finally managed to reach the bank of the Chocolate River, all covered in the gooey substance and ready to be served as strawberry fondue after being kicked out of the car and shot with the harmless-but-hurts-nonetheless whipped cream blaster gun until he tumbled over the bridge by the angry Kyuhyun who have had enough of Changmin’s lame excuses and attempts to sweet talk him.

After the last king passed away, Veggie Kingdom that ruled over the small but rich Planet Planto had been in distress for over a year due to the fight over the throne. The military wanted to take over, led by a tomato general. The council objected, of course, because not only the tomato general lacked royal blood, his true vegetable nature was also questionable since he bore the traits of a fruit. Yet the bad conditions on the soil and the unpredictable weather had continued to ruin the crops, delaying the birth of a royal heir even further as the military’s influence grew stronger.
Then a miracle happened as a carrot finally flourished. Fresh, organic carrot.
But it would take a while for the carrot to grow into an adult and take on a strong human form which could no longer be denied as the new king. Before that, the carrot was just like normal babies- weak, helpless and easy to break.
Fearing for its safety, the council sent loyal knights who sacrificed their lives to bring the carrot to Planet Parfait, and it would’ve been safe in the fridge of MIB’s leader if not for Changmin’s mischief which also indirectly turned Kyuhyun into the chosen one.
Junsu himself was unclear on what that meant, except for the fact that the carrot, in its current vegetative form, would rot away if separated from Kyuhyun or touched by anyone else but him.
At least Kyuhyun was allowed to carry out his missions as usual because Junsu thought it would be suspicious if one of MIB’s top agents stopped operating. After all, the military knew the carrot was in Planet Parfait, and they had been watching MIB very closely in secret. So Kyuhyun’s daily life continued normally, save from the carrot tucked inside the pocket of his suit, capturing illegal extraterrestrial immigrants and making sure the legal ones behaved while using neuralyzers when necessary to remove the memories of the witnesses.
With Changmin, of course, because he was Kyuhyun’s partner after all and especially because the slightly younger strawberry had apologized with an impressive amount of Kyuhyun’s favorite cakes as bribe.
Despite the whole commotion, the whole two weeks passed by quickly and rather uneventfully until two problems rose by the end.
The carrot still hadn’t taken a human form.
And the military found out about Kyuhyun.
***
“How the hell did they find out!?” Changmin growled as he reloaded his gun while running.
“Apparently they hacked the neuralyzers and monitored the memories. Remember Agent Kyuhyun’s suit set on fire during yesterday’s mission? They must’ve seen you taking the carrot out to save it,” Junsu explained. “By the time we realized the unusual glitch on the devices, they had already caught up with you two.”
They were lucky, Changmin thought grimly as he glanced at the gunshot wound on his twin brother’s shoulder, feeling agitated because Kyuhyun insisted that he was fine with a face that grew alarmingly pale. They were just outside the base when the enemy fired the shot. The enemy did end up breaching into the base, but if they were far out in a mission, there was a high chance that Kyuhyun would’ve-.
“Listen Agent Changmin,” Junsu broke through his unsettling thoughts, “their target right now is Agent Kyuhyun’s life because the carrot would die along with him. Take Agent Kyuhyun to the BV9 room. Enter command 4402u1 and it will be completely hidden from outside.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll hold them back,” Junsu readied his guns and swirled on his heels to face the incoming enemies. “GO!” He commanded firmly without looking back.
Changmin cursed under his breath, unwilling to leave the peach by himself but knowing that he needed to get Kyuhyun to safety, especially because Kyuhyun was really not in the condition to fight. He held onto the comfort of knowing that Junsu was a legend in combat and the room was only a level below them. They managed to reach BV9 without any hassle and Changmin was about to punch in the codes when an explosion could be heard from above.
“Hey,” Kyuhyun slapped Changmin’s hand away from the panel. “I’ll be fine. You go help Junsu.”
“What? No, you’re injured and-.”
“As long as I’m in the room, I’ll be safe. Junsu isn’t,” Kyuhyun entered the codes and quickly slipped into the room, but not before Changmin grabbed his arm with a determined and apologetic tone.
“…I’ll be back, okay? I’ll be right back.”
Kyuhyun shoved his twin brother’s strawberry head away and shut the door. Just then he let his knees buckled and slid down onto the floor. The bullet was most likely poisoned, a common trait in weapons from that kingdom. At least it wasn’t fatal, although it did weaken his body a great deal.
“Come on, come on…” He reached into his pocket and took out the carrot. “Come on, what are you waiting for?”
It was getting harder to breathe and he closed his eyes. A little rest. He just needed a little rest…
As the haze clouding his mind thickened, he could barely register the ruffling sounds next to him. Moments later, someone called his name, but he couldn’t answer.
And then there was a pair of lips pressed against his.
Slowly but surely, everything began to clear up once more. His eyes were still unfocused as the lips pulled away, but several blinks revealed an unfamiliar smiling face.
“You’re finally back. Don’t worry, the poison is gone now. I have natural antidote in me.”
He groaned weakly, the gunshot wound remained despite the poison gradually being neutralized. The stranger gathered him into his arms and carried him up as he began running. “I’m really sorry. Had to take you out of that room. The camouflage technology wouldn’t work against them and they would’ve killed you without checking whether I was there or not.”
“Who…?” He managed to ask shakily.
“My, how rude of me,” the stranger looked down and beamed at him. Now that Kyuhyun could see much clearer, the shape of his head was long, and orange, like… “My name is Choi Siwon, the carrot you’ve been protecting. Wish I could meet you under better circumstances.”
“Oh,” was the only thing that could come out of his mouth, until he realized that he was still in a very embarrassing position. “Uh, you can put me down.”
“No, you’re still-.”
“I’m fine already!” he barked in reflex, face flushed. He really felt much better now, the poison seemed to be flushed out of his system thanks to-.
And then there was a pair of lips pressed against his.
“I have natural antidote in me.”
He struggled and managed to get back on his feet with as little wobbling as possible, avoiding Siwon’s worried gaze and concerned touches despite the fact that they had practically been inseparable in the carrot’s previous form.
“Move away from him!” the unmistakable shout from his twin made Kyuhyun turn his head and saw Changmin pointing his gun at Siwon from behind the corner, his finger ready on the trigger.
“Changmin, no!” Kyuhyun immediately shouted. “It’s Siwon- he’s the carrot.”
The strawberry hesitated, but with Kyuhyun’s safety at stake, he refused to lower his gun. “For real?”
“Put that gun down, Agent Changmin.” Junsu appeared from behind him and stepped out of the corner before bowing at Siwon. “Your Majesty, I apologize for my subordinate’s ill-manner.”
“No, no, please,” Siwon shook his head as he advanced towards the two. “I’m- the whole Veggie Kingdom is indebted to all of you. Especially Kyuhyun,” he added with a smile directed towards the strawberry next to him.
“You don’t look like a king,” Changmin glowered and raised his gun on reflex, feeling an instant aversion caused by the odd stare this stranger was giving his twin brother, alongside the fact that Junsu stood up for him.
“Agent Changmin,” Junsu warned but Changmin just snorted.
“I understand your suspicion. But if you’ll excuse me, I have an urgent matter to attend to. I believe I can leave Kyuhyun in your care for now,” Siwon said as he stroked Kyuhyun’s face with that look Changmin despised again.
“Where are you going?” Kyuhyun asked in alarm.
“To end things,” he answered as he made his way to the huge steel door in front of them.
Junsu ran and stood before him, “Your Majesty, behind that door-.”
“I know, I can sense them,” Siwon threw a smile from behind his shoulder. “I am, after all, their rightful king. My authority is absolute, my reign undeniable. Such is the law of the Veggie Kingdom.”
“Still, I shall come with you,” Junsu said, causing Changmin to raise a protest and pulled Junsu to the side.
“No way you’re going out there!”
“Agent Changmin, the safety of His Majesty is-.”
“I don’t care! If he wants to go on a suicide mission, let him be! Your safety is more important!”
Junsu widened his eyes, red tint creeping into his peach cheeks as he stuttered about responsibilities. Changmin himself hadn’t seemed to realize the significance of his words and continued on about how he would never let Junsu put himself in danger for a rotten vegetable.
“It’s alright, you don’t have to go with me.” Siwon reassured them, putting an end to the argument. “It’s an unforgivable crime to kill the rightful king in my fully grown human form. The punishment is worse than death. No one would be as desperate to risk that. They will give up as soon as they see me. Also…” Chuckling at Changmin, he patted Junsu’s arm. “This young strawberry cares about you too much. Don’t leave him worried.”
It was Changmin’s turn to flush, just realizing how transparent he was being earlier. Junsu cleared his throat, “Are you sure it’s gonna be alright, Your Majesty?”
“I’m sure,” Siwon responded as he turned to the door again. The sound of gunshots could still be heard despite the thick steel separating the hallway and the hangar behind the door. He pressed the button on the side and the door slid open…
…and just like that, everything was put to a stop.
Kyuhyun could see the mortified looks on the enemies’ faces as Siwon walked into the hangar. One by one, they dropped their guns onto the floor, just like how Junsu said they would be. The MIB agents who had been defending the area were confused by the sudden ceasefire, but still kept their guards up.
Yet it seemed like Kyuhyun was the only one who noticed a desperate tomato slowly raising his gun from behind one of the planes. Of course, the general would lose everything anyway, might as well take his enemy down with him. Kyuhyun reached for his gun, remembered that it was gone sometime after he was shot, and did the only thing he could think of.
“Kyuhyun-!?”
He could barely hear Changmin’s voice as he dashed to push Siwon out of the way.
A sharp pain exploded on the side of his head and everything faded into darkness.
***
The first thing he saw when he came to was a shaking strawberry head, the owner’s face covered by his equally trembling hand.
“…Min…”
Changmin snapped his head up and fresh tears flooded his already tear-streaked red face. Kyuhyun would’ve laughed at the mess if he wasn’t feeling so guilty, knowing that he was the cause of his twin’s distress. The younger one wasn’t one to cry, not since that time when they were kids and Kyuhyun teased him endlessly about being a crybaby.
“Is it over?” Kyuhyun asked, noticing that they were inside the clinic at the MIB base.
“Yeah… yeah, it’s over.”
“I’m glad you’re fine.”
Changmin roughly rubbed his eyes with the back of his hands to and scowled. “Of course I’m fine. You were the one who dared to get hurt.”
“Junsu?”
“He’s great, already giving orders in the other room.”
“And Siwon?”
“You idiot, you big, big idiot!” Suddenly reminded that his twin brother nearly lost his life to save a certain carrot, Changmin looked like he was torn between wanting to shake him and wanting to hug him and ended up doing neither, afraid that he would Kyuhyun. He settled with rising to his feet and stomped angrily. “Why the fuck did you do that!?”
He didn’t know, to be honest. There was no other option in his mind, nothing else he could do at that moment. He had been protecting the carrot for two weeks, and it would all be in vain if he failed at the end. But he did it… didn’t he? “Is Siwon alright?”
Changmin snapped, “Why would you even ask about him!? This is all because of that disgusting carrot! None of this would happen if he didn’t land on your hand with whatever crap about the chosen one! I’m gonna kill him now, that ugly-.”
“Please don’t,” Siwon said from the doorway.
“You-!” Changmin looked ready to pick a fight, but Siwon only spared him a glance before he strutted towards the strawberry laying on the bed.
“Glad you’re awake now,” Siwon smiled as he held Kyuhyun’s hand, ignoring Changmin’s loud objection. “Thank you, I owe you my life.”
Despite the calm demeanor, Siwon’s hands were slightly shaking, as if he was holding himself back. Was it relief he saw in the carrot’s eyes?
Not just that… there was something else. Something that made him clear his throat as he asked, “So the kingdom…?”
“I am the new king. We did it. You did it.” Siwon reached out to lightly run the tips of his fingers along the side of his head. “I’m glad you’re alright.”
“Alright?” Changmin growled. “Alright? He got shot in the head because of you-!”
Ah, his head... Kyuhyun raised his hand to check but only managed to touch the lower edge of the bandages wrapped around his injury before Changmin stopped him. The younger strawberry’s grave expression told him that it was worse than he thought.
“How bad?”
“Chipped,” Changmin said and hurriedly added when Kyuhyun’s face fell, “but don’t worry, the doctor said it would heal and later it would only look like a dent on a rotten strawbe-.” It was too late to stop himself and Kyuhyun now looked like he was on the edge of tears. Frustrated, Changmin lashed out at Siwon.
“This is all because of you!!”
“Hey, hey, you look perfect, okay?” Siwon said, again paying little attention to the younger strawberry in the room. His eyes were sincere, fixed on Kyuhyun, his hold on Kyuhyun’s hands reassuring. “But if you’re really worried, I’ll take responsibility, remember?” He chuckled. “More like I’ve already decided that the moment I fell onto your palm.”
Kyuhyun’s eyes widened in confusion while Changmin gripped Siwon on his shoulder and forced the carrot to look at him as he barked, “What the fuck are you talking about?”
“Oh, right, you didn’t know about the true meaning of the chosen one.” Siwon brought Kyuhyun’s hand to meet his lips, a movement so sudden and so unexpected (then Kyuhyun remembered the kiss but that has a valid reason which was to neutralize the poison but there is no danger now so what could be the point of thiskisstohishand?) that Kyuhyun could only flush while Changmin gaped. “It means I had chosen Kyuhyun as my significant other.”
Silence.
Then a vein popped in Changmin’s forehead as he yelled, “LIKE HELL I WILL ALLOW THAT!”
