They are both shocked. They talk nervously for a while. It turns out that Robert has been back for two days, and Edna is hurt that he has not yet come see her. He assures her he has been busy with work. She thinks that he came back for work reasons, and not for her. He looks the same to her, and when their eyes meet silently, she recognizes that same glance that awakened her soul before.
"She imagines his arrival at her house to spend the evening with her. She would have no regrets."
