Well, I officially survived my first week of classes (and yes, I got that project done in time, too). Better, I've finalized my school schedule for the semester. I will be auditing Spanish for as long as the professor puts up with me, but won't be officially adding. A favorite professor of mine, henceforth dubbed Santa Angelica, reminded me of the difference between "can" and "should," for which I am most thankful. I'll take my next Spanish class in the spring, when I actually have time to do that and sleep.
On to the "Arts and Entertainment" section of the blog.
Now in theaters: "A Woman in Berlin," the story of what happened ot Berlin's female population at the end of WWII. It's a German production based on the anonymous diary of a woman who survived the Russian occupation following the fall of Berlin. It was in Russian and German, and had a vaguely feminist bend, thus, I had to see it. I'm still sorting out my opinions about how it handled certain suject matter, but I have to respect the filmmakers for tackling some very difficult topics. A more detailed review to come.
See a German trailer
HERE.
"The Baader Meinhof Complex" will be playing in Los Angeles, so I'm really excited. I remember seeing trailers for it a couple of years ago, and then never seeing it in theaters, so perhaps this is my chance. I've seen part of it, but never watched the whole thing through, so if i can convince a friend or two to join me, I might schlep into town to see it. The film deals with the Red Army Faction, a terrorist group in Germany during the Vietnam war era, and has Martina Gedeck in it, who's a really great actress, by the way.
In other news, California's burning down. The fires are nowhere near me, but every breeze brings that lovely, smokey smell and my asthmatic friends are wheezing like crazy. Las pobricitas.
