Reality check

Solutions to the vast problems that exist in our nation will not come easily. I doubt many people can actually grasp the total enormity of this country's "system". I know it's far beyond the reach of my small mind.

Changing a political party will not automatically bring magical solutions, as some seem to believe. Obama will face the same problems that exist now and the answers won't be as easy as just changing leaders. Obama isn't a savior any more than McCain was the devil. Both are men who want to see the US prosper but who have different paths in mind. He will face battles. The war may not be desirable (when is it) but leaving without abandoning people and forsaking the opinions of a lot of people who are involved there will be tough. Fixing the economy without raising taxes will be hard. And none of this can be done without the support of Congress who eternally have reelection written on their foreheads.

The euphoria I feel over Obama's win is the same I'd feel for any other milestone. We made history Tuesday night by electing the first African American to the White House. I do not feel some sobbing relief that McCain wasn't elected. I agree with someone else who said if the McCain who made the concession speech had shown during the election he could have won this. I had always liked McCain but turned away from him when he began pandering to the zealots he had earlier condemned. McCain would have made a better president than GWB.

But those that expect "change" to come easily or without pain and kidding themselves. Changing presidents doesn't change the system and, once in office, most of the politicans temper those promises with reality.

He's not the savior. He's a good man. I hope he makes a good president.
