Sports Ranting Ahead

May 17, 2013 05:45

I've only been able to watch the first two games of the Western Semis piecemeal since I'm still working on projects at home.  I really was all prepared to come on here though and rant about how much of a colossal bonehead Raffi Torres was for his hit on Jarret Stoll in game 1.  I didn't see the hit at the time, but I was automatically assuming it was going to look something like this:

Nah! Not at all!  This is how the play went down:

Look like something that would get you suspended for the rest of the series?  I suppose if you have the track record Torres has it'll do the trick.  These two incidents are light-years apart from each other!  With the Hossa hit, Torres went directly for his head, jumping about 4 inches off the ice to do so.  In this latest incident, Stoll was attempting an exit from his zone after being handcuffed by a pass, causing him to stumble forward a bit where he really just ran into an intercepting Torres.  Even the minor charging call is a bit weak because they were both traveling at about the same momentum.  Shouldn't really be anyone's fault except Stoll's if he wants to exit his zone face first.  I actually had a bit more of a problem with Patrick Marleau's hit on Drew Doughty behind the net

Really hoping the NHL gets their disciplinary act together one of these days.  They seem to make the wrong call consistently and have done so for several years now.

In other sporting news, the Dumbshit Brothers are no longer owners of the local basketball team, the Sacramento Kings.  I'm really not a huge basketball fan for several reasons, but I'll acknowledge this is big, big news. In the last 8 years, these dung beetles have attempted to relocate 3 times, extort even more concessions out of a partially-subsidized arena plan, flat out killed multiple subsidized arena plans, alienated their fanbase by bringing in bargain basement players and coaches, completely did away with maintenance of their current arena, enter into private negotiations to sell the team to a buyer who would relocate them rather than working with a group who would keep them.  The list of the Maloofs asshattery goes on and on.

Now that the local team is in (hopefully) better hands, I might try to get a game in or two.  Haven't been since 2002 and really there hasn't been much to see there as both the team and arena have been dumpsville.  Still nice to see something the city treasures survive though and great to see despicable people not get their way.
