The innovative Icelandic icon unveils new multimedia musical project and residency at the Manchester International Festival.
This summer, Björk Biophilia present, an extraordinary project and his most ambitious work to date, bringing together music, installations and concerts, while using the Internet. The project aims to explore the workings of sound, the endless expanse of the universe, planetary systems to atomic structures.
The world premiere of his project Biophilia concert will be held at the Manchester International Festival to a residence of three weeks through 6 performances in an intimate Campfield Market Hall to 1800 people. For these 6 special concerts, Björk sings songs from his upcoming studio album Biophilia and former securities with a small group of collaborators whose unique Icelandic Female Choir. The show will include a series of instruments designed and manufactured for the occasion, including an electronically controlled organ tailor, a 9-meter pendulum that uses gravity to create musical patterns - creating a bridge between ancient and modern - a hybrid of gamelan (Javanese percussion) and celesta, and a special box-to-music giant.
In special collaboration with MIF, the concert Biophilia will tour major cities in the world. The festival will also work with young people in Manchester to explore the musicological ideas, science and technology brought by this project. A series of workshops to give their students the opportunity to experience the world of Biophilia and sink into a much richer and inspiring meeting with the advanced technology, music and nature.
