What do you do when it's just one of those down days where it's cold and overcast and there's stuff you know you have to do but it's all just too much and you lack motivation, and you're stuck listening to depressing music and dwelling on what's  not right in your life, and every method you've previously trusted to make yourself feel better seems ( Read more... )

Here's the way I look at it: In those circumstances, you're really not going to get anything done until later, SO instead of sitting in the cold basement and listening to depressing music, you are OBLIGED to do something else, at least for a little while. Some ideas:

Run off into the distance as far as your body will let you, then sing songs as you walk back home.

Design a new outfit for yourself, then learn how to sew so that you can make it for yourself someday

Trudge over to Donna's house and ask if you can use her hot tub

Make taffy. Or fudgey lovin' (brownie mix (without eggs) eaten via graham crackers)

Go to the wikipedia website and learn something new

Raid your sister's CD's or that great big stack of records for something new

Call Justin and put together a game of frisbee

Get out the crayons and an old coloring book and revert back to childhood

Do something nice for Mom that she won't expect

Go jam on the piano!

Make yourself some tea or hot chocolate, grab a new or favorite book, and go chill out in my room.

Collect items to put into a package and send to Deborah.

Learn a monologue. (ask me for suggestions)

Plan something tremendously fun to do during the upcoming weekend so that you can assure yourself of something fun to do when you actually legitimately have free time

Walk up to the door of a random neighbor we don't know and meet them. Bring them a jar of homemade jam or something.

Apply for a scholarship.

Write a play for Barnyard Theatre - a one-act, an epic poem, whatever.

Pick a tiny corner of our yard and turn it into a garden

Knit something.

Start thinking of a really cool song or piece of theatre or something that could be presented at church as part of the Christmas service.

Think up a new business, learn how to make a business plan, get other people excited about it, and make millions.

Write your sister Alicia a letter or email of any length =)

Go get to know the people at Noah's, tell them you're my sister, and try to score free bagels off of them (or land a job there, then you'd be too busy to sit in the cold basement)

Try and figure out a biblical concept that has never made complete sense to you - like maybe speaking in tongues or fasting or holiness. Read everything you can find about it, both in the Bible and elsewhere, talk on the phone or write emails to pastors and knowledgeable people. Pray and expect answers.

Plan out what you're going to get everybody for Christmas - how amazing would it be to be DONE with that before Thanksgiving??!?!

Sing.

Wow. I am going to copy that into a file and print it out for those days.
That was awesome.

When I'm having one of those days, I usually don't deal with it gracefully. Luckily, so far in my experience, the next day tends to be a better one.
