Good news? Bad news? I'm not quite sure yet. The concept must have been good otherwise Paul wouldn't have done it, I guess. Let's hope he hadn't had to sign up for seven years!

I still think it's all related to selling Passchendaele via increasing his profile with the US market - he's just picked the highest profile thing he was offered. Quality is optional.

In truth, I think I'll be taking a back-seat with this one, and not really commenting on the whole thing.

As we haven't seen a second of this it way be high quality or it may be total rubbish...but we don't know yet so why are you so down on this? Not meant as a critisism but rather as a genuine question? Just because it's an American series it doesn't mean that it has to be awful -they make lots of good stuff too- or that he has 'sold out' (remember DS was a US netwosk programme and we wouldn't have wanted to miss out on that)so genuinely curios.

Mind you having seen a couple of clips,I'm probably joining you on the negative side of the fence. (Definitely not complaining about the pool though...we can be shallow together)

Surely the problem in Canada,as I understand it, is that their tv/film is totally dominated by the US...so there is a very limited amount of stuff (and especially quality stuff)that is likely to be made so for all that he may prefer to stay at home and work, be it 'quality' or commercial, there isn't a lot availble even for someone as high profile as him. He still has to put food on te table after all.

And it struck me last night that this is why he is doing this - he doesn't care about the US audience at all, but he knows that this will boost his profile with Canadian audiences, thereby leading to more of them watching his Canadian stuff. He's simply gone for the project which will likely lead to the greatest audience figures. Crafty Bastard.

Also? Looking at the trailers, I am fully expecting this to be complete shit, but that does mean that we don't have to worry about artistic integrity, but can just concentrate on seeing Paul. I've already read one review of the pilot which said that Paul was the best in it...well, duh.

IIRC (I saw it a long time ago), the film was pretty good. Which? Means nothing, because I hated the Buffy film but really liked the series, and I loved both the M*A*S*H movie and the spinoff series.

From the promo, I think Paul is going to have scads more talent than the rest of the cast--as for the writing, the jury's still out.

Of course, it could be that he feels that the only way to go in Canada is down now, that he's reached a ceiling, so he's moving on, trying something different, having light-hearted fun for a while rather than killing himself as he did with Pass. and I can fully understand that.

I don't think he's reached a ceiling, but I do think that making Passchendaele was a lot of work and the PR stuff was even more stressful, so you're likely right about the light-hearted stuff. One thing I'm positive of is that he's not leaving Canada behind. The guy is pretty much married to Canada (and I love him to tiny red-and-white pieces for it, in case nobody's guessed. *g*).

Yes, I've changed my tune about the Pass. theory - it isn't that at all, but more about boosting his profile within Canada on the basis that Canadians watch US tv far more than Canadian productions.
One thing you may find is that if he does do any publicity for Eastwick, we'll see him pop up only in Canadian media or media which is pan North America. If he's married to Canada, he's having a fling with Hollywood to show Canada just how good he looks.

I can't imagine Passchendaele will be picked up in the US no matter what cartwheels are turned. The US market isn't interested in their OWN war films, let alone a battle from a country where most in the US can't even name the Prime Minister.
