Alright, Daphne," Dr Li instructed, getting the girl ready for her first ultrasound, "I need you to lay back and put your feet in the stirrups for me."

Daphne sat up a little. "Wait, why do I need to do that. Don't you run the little wand thing over my stomach?"

"Not this early in the pregnancy," the doctor informed her. "We have to do this one internally. But don't worry, it shouldn't feel any different than what got you into this condition in the first place."

Dr Li put some warm gel over the top of the ultrasound wand, which Daphne thought looked sort of like a robotic dildo. The thought made her giggle, and she just laid back and closed her eyes.

The doctor slowly inerted the device into what would in a few months be her birth canal. Daphne winced in pain for a second. 'Yeah, this is nothing like what got me into this mess. Justin was much more gentle and nice,' she thought to herself.

A second later, Daphne opened her eyes and focused on the computer screen. All she could see was gray. Dr Li was still tying to find the baby, when the door to the room burst open. Both women looked to see who dared to interrupt this moment.

"Why Daphne," Brian said with a smirk, "I had no idea you decided to go to the dark side. You've obviously been around the munchers too long."

The girl flipped him off, but her smile gave her away. "I didnt think you'd actually come," she said as he crossed the room and left a kiss on her cheek.

"Yeah, well..." Brian trailed off. He pulled up a chair and sat beside her, holding her hand.

"I'm Dr Li," the woman explains as she puts out a hand for Brian to shake. "And you are?"

"Brian Kinney," he answers. "The father's partner."

The doctor nods her head. "I heard about that. I'm so sorry for your loss." She gave Brian a sympathetic look, and then returned her attention to the moniter.

"But," she continued, "here is some good news." She turned up the volume and they heard some thump-thump sounds. The sound was different than Brian was used to, getting more of his thump-thump from Babylon. This was quieter, more comforting.

"What's that noise?" he asked the doctor. He wasn't sure whether to be concerned or thrilled. He had never come to the pre-natal appointments with Lindsay.

"That is the baby's heartbeat," the doctor explained. "It sounds really fast compared to ours, but it's very normal for this stage."

"Oh, my god, Brian," Daphne whispered and squeezed Brian's hand tighter. "That's my baby's heartbeat. It's really alive."

The words sunk into Brian's mind. Daphne's baby, Justin's baby, was alive and well. His little heart was already beating. And Brian wished that Justin's was still doing the same.

"Do you want to see your baby?" Dr Li asked Daphne.

The girl nodded quickly. "Yes. I really do." She turned her head to look at Brian, who was also nodding his approval.

"You shoved that thing up her snatch, we might as well see the the little squirt," Brian spoke, his usual sarcastic manner hiding his real need to see his lover's baby.

"I can see what attracted the father to you," Dr Li quipped, but turned the moniter to Daphne and Brian so that they could see the picture more clearly.

"Where is it?" Brian asked. He looked at it, but all he could see was black and grey. He turned his vision to Daphne, who looked equally confused.

Dr Li pressed a few more buttons, and soon there were labels and arrows on the screen, pointing out the baby and the yolk sac.

"Wow..." Daphne breathed. She couldn't take her eyes away. "That's...we made that. Justin and I made that..."

Brian said nothing, He couldn't speak. He just continued to look at the picture on the screen. He didn't think he'd ever be so attached to something so small. Hell, he wasn't even sure he'd want to be involved with Gus until the boy was born.

He had never been with Lindsay to these doctor visits, but now he wished he had been. This was truly amazing. He made a mental note to come to appointments with Daphne from now on.

"Can you tell if it's a boy yet?" Brian heard himself ask, though he hadn't intended on it.

"No," the doctor said. "Actually, it'll be another two week before the sex organs are even formed. And to clearly see them, we'd have to wait until 18-20 weeks gestation. So we have a little while to go."

"Wow, that's almost 3 months away," Daphne groaned. "This pregnancy is going to take forever."

"Enjoy this time while it lasts," Dr Li told her. "In a little over 6 months, you'll be dealing with a crying, eating, pooping baby. So try to enjoy the silence now."

"Remind me to start looking for a nanny," Brian said jokingly to Daphne.

"Oh, are you planning on helping her raise the child?" the doctor asked the ad exec.

"We're still figuring out who the baby is going to live with, but I'll definitiely be helping out. I may actually try to take him on, myself..." Brian trailed off, realizing for the first time that he'd come to that conclusion. He still hadn't been sure that he'd do more than occasionally babysit, but seeing Justin's little squiggle of a son on the screen must have changed his mind, because he knew that he'd do whatever he needed to for the little boy (somehow, he knew it was a boy), even if that meant raising the child himself.

"Oh, that's wonderful!" Dr Li exclaimed. "I'm glad to see that Miss Chanders has support."

"Yeah, I am, too," Daphne smiled at Brian.

"Okay, Miss Chanders, lay back, and I'll remove the probe. The baby looks great, so we're done here."

The removal of the ultrasound wand didn't hurt nearly as much as the insertion, so Daphne didn't even notice it was out until the doctor told her that she could get dressed behind the curtained area of the room.

"It was nice to meet you, Mr Kinney," Dr Li said as Daphne went behind the curtain with ther clothes. "I have to ask, will this be your first child?"

"No," Brian replied. "I provided sperm to a friend of mine from college and her girlfriend. They're his parents, but I have him sometimes."

"That's nice," the doctor smiled at him. "How old is your son?"

"He's 10 months," Brian answered. "Christ, they're going to be less than a year and a half apart..."

"Will you be considering this child as your son, as well, then?"

Brian contemplated that question for a moment. "I'll raise him, but he will know from the start who his father is. I won't keep Justin from him."

"It sounds like you have everything figured out, Mr Kinney. This child will obviously be very loved. He or she is very lucky."

"Yeah. I'll do my best to make sure he has a good life." Brian said, more to himself than to the doctor.

Daphne pulled back the curtain, alerting both adults to her presence. "Okay, I'm ready. Do we have anything else we have to do today?"

"No, you're all set," Dr Li said as she put a bag together for Daphne. "Here are a few more ginger candies, and some samples of skin cream. Soon enough, that baby will be changing your body so it's a good idea to stock up now, and make sure your skin stays hydrated."

"Thank you, Doctor," Daphne said, taking the bag and turning to leave.

"When is the next appointment?" Brian asked before leaving the room.

"Next month," the woman replied. "Are you going to try and be here for all of them?"

"Yes," Brian said sincerely. "I didn't come to these things with my son. I want to do it right this time."

The doctor nodded. "I'm always glad to see participation from the father...or in this case, from the adoptive parent. I look forward to gettin to know you, Mr Kinney. You seem like a very interesting man."

"You have no idea," Brian said with a chuckle as he walked out the door. When he walked outside, he just stood for a moment, holding a picture from the ultrasound in his hand.

'Yeah, I guess I'm going to be your daddy, little man.' He thought to himself and to the baby in the picture. 'I must have lost my mind.'
