Yeah! I was reading that and going... Kakashi, stop. You're going to eat those words later and regret you ever uttered them or judged anyone about them. I mean, sure Lee tried to kill himself to beat Gaara, but at least Gai's student didn't betray a village and attempt to kill .. oh, his own teammate with the forbidden/high-level jutsu his teacher taught him IN SECRET! And at least while Gai did it on his off-time, he didn't, oh, I don't know, ABANDON THE REST OF HIS TEAM to do it.
I am still, slightly bitter about it. Volume 11, when I do my review of it, will probably show this -_-;;
You also see how personally Naruto takes Kakashi teaching Sasuke one-on-one while getting pushed off onto Ebisu. While Ebisu's databook stats are okay for an instructor, I have no idea what the hell Ebisu could've schooled Naruto in that would help in his fight against Neji.
Well, I'm glad for it, and I'm REALLY glad you mentioned it. Around the end of the review, I was getting tired and didn't note it, despite the fact it needed to be in BIG BOLD LETTERS. And I'm really glad Naruto showed it to Kakashi, because Sakura didn't get a chance to show him the "you've totally just let me down" face when Kakashi up and left her without any instructions outside of paying attention to rules to a tournament she wasn't even qualified to ENTER! WTF?!
Okay, officially, Ebisu was picked because Naruto sucked at the basics. Partially due to the fact that he slept through all the hard classes, and partially due to the fact that at the time, no one believed in him so he had no reason to really try hard at things that people 1) wasn't going to support him in doing, in any way, shape or form - thank you Iruka for FINALLY growing EYES! - so very low morale and 2) No one to show him the way when he was confused. So, Kakashi's reasoning is that Naruto would be a better ninja if he could at least master the basics, and his now-or-never attitude while he's brain goes to Sasuke-land, probably didn't think it through very well... since he obviously doesn't know Ebisu outside of the professional field - obviously. So, most likely, he spoke to Asuma or something and he picked Ebisu due to the fact that, "hey, teaching the Hokage's grandkid... must be something, right?" attitude. At least Ebisu taught Naruto to walk on water, which is a higher technique than what Kakashi taught Team 7 after ONE FREAKIN' YEAR!
(Yes, I am especially bitter that after one year, Kakashi taught Sakura 0 Genjutsu, despite naming her venue upon meeting her - likely after reading her stats.)
I'm glad Jiraya taught Naruto something as advanced as summoning toads.. though I don't see how that's going to help Naruto beat Neji either. But more of that in Volume 11 when the two thick-skulls fight! Duke it out, you two!

Seriously. Not only chastised Gai pre-Sasuke training. Chastised Jiraiya after Sasuke pulled out Chidori during the fight! I will be the first to admit that Naruto pulled out the Rasengan before the Chidori... but Sasuke also covered the entire rooftop in fire before that. Rasengan does have a non-lethal application as Jiraiya showed in its first appearance. Chidori... is an assassination technique for killing people dead and not alive kthxbye! (Speaking of which, someone seems to have neglected Sasuke's education regarding "vital" attack points... if you put a whole the size of your fist through someone, even if it's not the heart, they will probably DIE OF SHOCK OR BLEED TO DEATH YOU RETARD.
And at least while Gai did it on his off-time
The way I interpreted the training flashback was that Gai attempted to teach it to ALL his students, but Lee was the only one who could open the gates at that time. So, ZERO neglect from Gai and I'm not even sure there's favoritism with Lee. Yeah, Lee's his protege, but Gai's equally enthused about Neji and Tenten and seemed to take their training just as seriously, if not in the same directions. Lee actually seems to have willfully adopted Gai's habits rather than a forced molding on Gai's part.
Kakashi's reasoning is that Naruto would be a better ninja if he could at least master the basics
While I do think there is some bias and assholery in Kakashi's choice on who and how to train his students, I can't ignore that there were a lot of circumstances that Kakashi had to face at this time. Sasuke's stated that he's devoted to revenge from day one. Orochimaru's marked him with the cursed seal. There have been multiple kidnapping attempts on Sasuke already and Oro scares the piss out of Kakashi. Sasuke's opponent is a blood-thirsty jinchuuriki (it's not stated that the Leaf knows, but with 2 previous Shukaku hosts from Suna... yeah, I'm betting they could add it up). There's the likelihood of an attack from Orochimaru. Oh, and Naruto's chakra control has gone to shit for some reason. The man had a lot on his plate and made the most logical decisions available in his no-win scenario. And he has a point: If Naruto had as much a mastery of the basics as Sakura or Sasuke, he'd be a juggernaut with his clones and insane chakra capacity. However, I think you're right in that Kakashi's been a genius for so long, he doesn't really know how to relate to his non-genius students.
At least Ebisu taught Naruto to walk on water
As we'll see next chapter, it's not as much "taught" as "told he could do it too." Once Oro's seal comes off, Naruto walks on water almost instantly. That, to me, speaks quite highly of Naruto's increased aptitude toward chakra control rather than Ebisu's teaching.
(Yes, I am especially bitter that after one year, Kakashi taught Sakura 0 Genjutsu, despite naming her venue upon meeting her - likely after reading her stats.)
You and me both!
I don't see how that's going to help
Naruto summons Gamabunta on top of Neji. Neji loses. Repeat until Hokage.
Jiraya is the one who is the least messed up of all the adults and he, at least, gave up on a bad thing
Very true. He's the old war vet who came back scarred, but still whole. He's triumphed over most of his obstacles and is completely true to himself... no matter how perverse that might be! And yet, even though he's stayed out Konoha's mess for a while, he's still the good son: doing the spy networking, helping during the invasion, and even threatening to kill Tsunade when she's later tempted to help Orochimaru regain his strength and crush the village. He's "loser" who's grown up and glad he was never a "genius" -- in essence, Naruto only without the higher ambition.
