While the crowds of humans gushed over the sakura trees, Ann found herself curiously drawn, following their pointed fingers and looking up at the blossoms as well. She soon discovered that she didn't share their enthusiasm, though. The other human girls had talked excitedly and extensively already about the beauty of these flowers but Ann found herself drifting to the back of the crowd, once again an alien in an alien land. This little trip just drove that point home all the more.
What Ann saw was that the flowers were pink and small and fragile. The first thought in her head was that it wouldn't survive a day in space or last a moment without the nutrient of the earth. As it scattered to the ground, Ann could see the life energy fading from the blossoms abandoned and promptly crushed by the passing feet of tourists and students, adults and children.
Her eyes wondered from the ground and up once more. She wondered, if long ago, the Makaiju tree had bloomed like this. There were legends, of course, that the survivors have told her and Ail when they had been small and young. Before they were alone, before the others died of starvation and lack of energy. There had been stories when the nights grew too cold or another planet's inhabitants had chased them off. It had been a long time ago since Ann thought of these times, for there was nothing good about them except Ail.
What was beautiful, Ann thought, as she looked around her, was the level of energy flowing thickly through the air. She smiled and closed her eyes, inhaling the scent of fresh power, ripe for the plucking. Aside from the annoying Sailor Senshi, they had still managed to gather more energy than ever before. The ache of starvation was still there, and the Makaiju tree was still barren, but Ann was confident that soon they would be free of this prison called Hunger. They have never been this close to finding a place safe enough to rest, never been this close to being free...
Someday, Ail and her won't have to struggle so hard to survive, she thought hopefully as she watched her classmates bicker. Someday, they would be able to be rid of those warriors in ridiculous armor and, perhaps, even walk the streets of Tokyo as themselves. When that time came, the blonde haired idiot in front of her would have lost her hold on Ail and maybe she’d know what Mamoru really tasted like before she tossed him aside.
The bickering escalated around her, and the energy of Life seemed to pulse and sing its jaunty little tune as it plucked blossom after blossom from the tree. Ironic how all these people gathered to see the death of these plants, smiling and laughing out about life and romance as they scattered the remains of petals about their blankets. Ann thought this was rather poetic a place to gather the much needed resources for the Makaiju tree.
Smiling as she leaned back on her hands, Ann licked her lips in anticipation for the things to come.
End.
