My sister got an Xbox 360 for Christmas. I got her Mass Effect, insisting she play it since the next game is coming out at the end of January. I'm spending a lot of time sitting next to her watching her play it. It's rather like watching a film that way. A really long film in which you yell "STOP CROUCHING! GO LEFT! THE OTHER LEFT!" at the director.
It does mean I'm picking up things I didn't notice in my first play through (yes, I've only played through the whole thing one - I tried to replay recently, but threw the controller when I got murdered after clawing my way through Therum on 'hardcore' and then got killed before I saved, sending me back to the start of the whole level), like, for example, the inference that the Rachni Wars were started by an external agency, possibly the Reapers. I never saw that first time out.
And no, that's not a massive massive spoiler. Both the rachni wars and the Reapers are known to exist by a couple of hours in.
But, with this ME2 soon to come out, and my getting to rewatch the game, I thought I'd throw a fic rec out there. This is probably the only Mass Effect fic I like. It focusses on Shephard without tailoring it to another playing by providing a first name, but happened to use the same general background for Shephard that I'd chosen (Female, Earthborn). It's really the only long, plotty (complete) fic I can really find for this fandom apart from another story involving Joker by the same author. But I'm recommending this one for the depiction of Earth, of the life of the Earthborn rat who winds up running with the 10th Street Reds almost by accident... I just really enjoy reading it.
