I've spent the majority of my summer in Fayetteville without much direction with what I'd like to do with myself for, at least, the next year. While I'm not necessarily doing anything I imagined a year ago, I am at least moving in the right direction. I secured a job with a prominent architecture firm in Little Rock by the name of AMR. Oddly enough, they don't have a website, but have done a great number of large scale projects in the downtown Little Rock area. They have recently been focusing on multi story retail/condominium projects, a reoccurring theme as of late all across Arkansas, but unlike Fayetteville, the demand is still in demand. When I went to meet with the head guy last Tuesday, he very impressed with my portfolio, pointing out the fact that I was both a good designer and artist, something he values in his employees, as they need to be both gifted in mind and hand. He proceed to take me out of the office, and give me a tour of their most recent project--an 18-story condo project a block away. We took me up to two different units, both very large and fancy; one of them being the new home of some professional basketball player whose name escapes me at the moment. It was quite an unusual display, as the whole "interview" took over two hours. I felt that I had the job if he was so inclined to take me on a tour, and sure enough, he called me Thursday saying that there would be a space for me, and to meet with him next week--probably to iron out details like pay and starting date.
I really do enjoy Little Rock a lot more since I've been in school. The city has improved a lot; there's way more to do, and the new river market area gives the city a charm that rivals that of Fayetteville's Dickson Street. Little Rock's probably three times the size of Fayetteville, and sometimes I just feel like I've gotten everything out of that city that I can. I've met everyone that I'd want to meet, I've dated everyone I'd want to date (or who's putting themselves out there to date), I've done everything there is to do; and now it's time to move on to slightly bigger things.
The next step after LR is to eventually find a job in San Diego. My Uncle came to my graduation last May, and told me that if I ever wanted to live there, he has a house where I could stay for free (at least for awhile). I guess at the time, I was so hellbent on going to Los Angeles, that I ignored the opportunity. Now I've realized that I could just move there, save some money, and after a few years, move to LA after a few years under my belt, and the leverage to ask for a higher salary.
All in all, move to LR is a move in the right direction. It's not that glitzy, but in my opinion, it is the place to be, if you're going to be in Arkansas.
