I have been in Washington D.C. for 2 weeks and realized that I haven't posted in that entire time. And I have no idea how I'm going to include all of the amazing, wonderful things that have happened in that 2 weeks in one LJ post. So I'll sort of start at the beginning. I got here on a Thursday afternoon, so when I moved into my house all of my 7 other housemates (yes, there are 8 of us in one cramped, messy, chaotic, and wonderful house) were still at work. So I went to Target to buy some random things that were difficult to bring on a plane, like a blanket, pillow, shower caddy, etc. When I got back, two of my roommates, Kyle and Elspeth, were sitting and talking in the living room. We started talking about movies, and politics, and literature, and I knew that I would like living in this house. Then on Friday I walked to Chinatown and took a look at DC's ginormous library. That night I met up with Kristi for dinner. I had never eaten Indian food, so we found an Indian restaurant in Adams-Morgan and it was pretty good. When I got back to the house, my roommates were sitting around and drinking so I joined them for some drinking games. Long story short, I woke up the next morning vaguely remembering having thrown up the night before but hoping that it was a dream. It wasn't. I had thrown up in the shower caddy that I bought the day before. So perhaps it wasn't the best first impression, but whatever.
I started work last Monday, which is going great. I absolutely love my job, and I feel like even though I'm an intern I am doing things that are actually beneficial to the organization and not just busy work. On Tuesday we got to watch the House Ag Subcommittee on commodities markup the commodity title of the farm bill. It was really interesting, and kind of surreal to watch. Since we were in an overflow room, we were watching the markup on a TV screen, so it just felt like we were watching C-Span. But in my mind I knew that I was watching something that was happening in the next room. Other than going on other random field trips/hearings/receptions, I've been working on some information sheets for the state organizations. Basically, NFU compiles fact sheets for every important issue to send to the states so that our policy is consistent, and so that they can easily have a bunch of talking points at their fingertips. So I just finished one for COOL, and am working on one about rising food prices and how ethanol production isn't to blame. Interesting stuff.
Ok, more stories later.
