priceline ;-).

it's an online bidding site. you enter the city, your arrival date, how many nights you are staying, what area of the city you want to stay, and how many stars you want.

then you enter the amount you want to pay and they'll see if there is a hotel that accepts your bid. if a hotel accepts your bid your credit card is immediately charged and you then find out the hotel. so the downside is that you only know the area you'll be staying in, not the exact hotel.

however, you can go to this site...

they have a thread that lets you know what hotels typically pop up so you'll have an idea where you end up. here are the possible hotels for San Fran...

i'm cheap so i normally use priceline. i've never been upset with my priceline experience and get rooms for more than half of what i would have if i went through other avenues.

if you want to go the straightforward booking route here are some of my favorite sites in order...
http://www.orbitz.com/
http://quickbook.com/
http://travelocity.com/
http://www.cheaptickets.com/

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ (this site is good for getting reviews of hotels.)

if you end up finding a specific hotel that you want to stay at you should check the hotel's website b/c a lot of them have best price guarantees if you book directly through them.
