The American version of Life on Mars is blasphomous. It's just so bad. I actually feel like vomiting... but I can't look away no matter how much I want to now that I've tuned in.
Jason O'Mara is no John Simm. He's not a bad actor but he doesn't have the subtle skill of John Simm, he's more broad brush strokes. Sam is supposed to be a rigid edge against all rule breakers and benders. I also really don't like the narrative change with what Sam almost does to young Colin Raimes. Sam Tyler would never even entertain that thought. Ever. Sam Tyler is about the rules. He is a brick wall of red tape, he is whiter then white. Every cop must be a clean cop. No exceptions. That is the Sam Tyler way.
Harvey Keitel is not Philip Glenister. Keitel is playing a lion in Glenister's jungle and is going to get eaten alive. Harvey Keitel is no Gene Hunt. They should have changed the characters name, because calling Keitel Gene Hunt is just a mockery of all the fine work that Philip Glenister has put into the British version of the character.
Nelson isn't right either. Nelson was a huge part of Sam's journey in the original. Nelson stood for something very important in the story and I don't see how that would work in the Americanized version.
Annie is just different enough she works, plus Gretchen Mol seems really good in the part. She's not the same charcter as Annie Cartwright, she's Annie Norris and she could stand for the same things while being just different enough to not stomp all over the original character. She is the only thing likeable about the entire show.
The British version of Life on Mars is some amazing television. The American version looks like utter shit, a waste of time, space and money. I won't be tuning in again. I'll just pop in my dvds of the original and be oblivious to it's existence from now on. It does not deserve the effort I took to write this entry, but I hope to warn others off. Just watch the original online (I had to import my dvds from England). It's a million times better then this Americanized rip off.
