I'm not the kind of audience member that typically desires to be a fictional character. Sure, I fall in love with certain characters, but that's just proof of a well created character. I am not the person that wants to BE Marty McFly. I might dream about having a time machine. I might dream about driving around in a DeLorean wearing a life jacket, but at no time do I ever desire to live the life of Marty McFly.
I bring this up because I am currently two books into the "Fletch" series. And, after two books, I can honestly say that I'm jealous of the titular character's voice. His dialog is snarky, sarcastic, honest, and clever. I read these books and become jealous that I cannot converse in this maliciously smart way. Now, I know that Greg McDonald probably works for hours or days on perfecting every brilliant word, but I don't care. I want my every day voice to sound just as clever as if someone else spent months perfecting it. I want to spit out phrases like, "Writers have an uncontrollable compulsion to control compulsion."
Wouldn't that be amazing?
Hmmm...
