We just got home from four days at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. I'm pretty punchy at work today, having made it home at 3am.

We have a bunch of new CDs to listen to, and our formerly showroom-clean car is now full of dust and dirty clothes and camping gear.

Some random thoughts...

- It's not at all hard to cross into Canada with no license plates on your car, and a temporary tag in the window. It was way harder to get through North Dakota without having a talk with the state police about my registration.

- There are musicians who can just drop in on complex chord progressions by ear, and play along. I wish I was those people.

- I like the Avett Brothers much better on the radio than in person. Not sure why. I kept thinking "oh, wait, I know this song too!" while failing to get excited by hearing it in person.

- Devon Sproule looks (and to a lesser degree, acts) disturbingly like one of my exes. I was weirding out every time I saw her, and we ended up at a whole bunch of her performances. I've had several of her CDs for ten years and I'd never actually seen a picture of her. She's quite good!

- If Ukrainian folk/punk/bar rock sounds like fun, you should give it a go.

- Greg Brown's Fat Boy Blues is awesome.

- I would probably go and watch any member of John Hiatt's band play all by themselves.

- Oscar Brand is annoying. He wastes a lot of time playing half a song and then telling Grandpa Simpson stories for the next 20 minutes.

- Tao Seeger is a cool dude. Not sure what his recorded music is like, but on stage he's a blast. He was in on the two coolest, goosebumps-inducing workshop jams of the weekend (Saturday: Leonard Podolak(The Duhks)/Tao Seeger/William Elliot Whitmore/The Good Lovelies, Sunday: Tao Seeger/Devon Sproule/Kinnie Starr/Leeroy Stagger/Sarah Lee Guthrie&Johnny Irion).

- Apparently folk musicians are only allowed to marry other folk musicians. And have folk musician children.
