Todd furrowed his brow as he held up the wrapped box and shook it slightly, listening to the object rattle inside.
"What's this?"
Neil grinned. "Just open it. Trust me."
Todd raised an eyebrow but offered no further objection. After untying the (hastily done) bow and tearing off the layer of shiny paper, he was greeted with...
"Another layer of wrapping paper?"
"Just open it."
Shrugging, Todd tore off the next ribbon and the next layer.
An hour later, Todd found himself unable to see his bed, as it was covered in roughly a one-foot-deep sea of wrapping paper and ribbons. Hands trembling (both from excitement and exhaustion), he began to pull the lid off of the small box as Neil watched, a smile on his face.
"Hold it," Neil said, reaching out to stop Todd's hand. Todd looked up, surprised. "Well, I just wanted to say that-you know how you said that your parents never thought about your present? And how you always wanted something nicer, like a car?"
Both of Todd's eyebrows were now raised. "You didn't."
Neil winked. "I did."
Todd let the lid go flying, paused, then gave Neil a light punch.
"A Monopoly car?!"
Neil laughed. "What were you expecting? Keys to a new car?" He laughed again, this time louder as he saw the confused look on Todd's face. "C'mon, I know we're friends and all, but we're a bunch of broke guys living in a boarding school."
"I was not expecting keys," Todd said, throwing the silver car at Neil, who only laughed harder.
"Are you mad?" Neil asked later, his voice soft in the darkness, a look of slight concern on his face. "I was only teasing, you know."
Todd opened his eyes and rolled over to look at Neil.
"Mad?" he echoed, then smiled and laughed. "That was the best birthday present I've ever gotten."
Surprised, Neil said, "Really?"
Todd nodded. "Yeah."
A moment passed between them, Todd hesitating before he reached over and brushed his hand against Neil's. In a soft voice, he whispered:
"Thank you."
