Author's Notes: I had been toying with the beginning idea, but the ending just popped out of nowhere, LOL. Oh, and this has a lame title, I know. :P

Mohinder didn’t quite know why he was putting forth so much effort for this little girl. Well, of course, there was her extraordinary ability, yes, but that couldn’t be the only reason. For God’s sake, this man had a gun-he had a gun-and all three of their lives were in danger.

All over this one little girl.

He didn’t want to and didn’t intend to shoot. Yet, somehow, he knew that he would-just for this girl. Pull the trigger, condemn himself, lower himself to his level and kill a man, essentially over a special ability.

But was that really it? The only reason? No, there must have been more. His hands were trembling as he held up the gun. No, this girl-he’d only known her for a little while, yet he already felt close to her, attached to her, as if he had known her for his entire life. And to see her whimpering, cowering in the corner-he couldn’t, wouldn’t take it, those heart-wrenching sobs.

He was helpless to do anything, and he knew this. His mind was racing, cycling through plan after scenario after plan, discarding one in favor of the beginning of another, which was soon tossed aside as well. If he… no, that was far too risky. But if… no, that was even worse. Too dangerous; too dangerous.

The sound of her helpless whimpers filled his ears, echoing, pleading him to please, please hurry and do something.

I won’t let the boogeyman get you. Not merely a statement, but a promise. And there was no way that he would let this man with the horn-rimmed glasses take her, nor would he let anyone else-Sylar, his mind whispered-ever even touch her, or else there would be hell to pay.

I won’t be like my father, he thought. I will never have a heart of stone. I’ll never let myself.

He closed his eyes, took in a deep breath, then let out a desperate yell of “Duck!” fly from his mouth before gritting his teeth and pulling the trigger.

In the end, he thought as the gunshot rang in his ears, it came down to just one thing: he didn’t want to lose her. Not again. He came too late the last time, failing to protect her. And now that he had been given a second chance, there would be no way he’d let it pass him by, let it happen again.

Her body was so small, so fragile, as he cradled her in his arms, patting her head and telling her that it’s okay, it’s okay… her big brother was here for her.
